They also state somewhere that if you don't submit parental info (below 29) then you are automatically DQ'd from aid.
From my understanding, students under 29 are required to submit parental info in the form of tax returns and W-2s if they want aid, but not required to complete the parental portion of FAFSA. Can anyone corroborate?
That is my understanding. The parental info section on the FAFSA is not required:

http://hls.harvard.edu/dept/sfs/managin ... ification/

The Federal government considers all graduate students to be independent for the purposes of determining eligibility for federal loans. Therefore, you only need to complete the student (and spouse, if applicable) sections of this form. Parent information is not required on the FAFSA for graduate students.
My understanding is that parental information is required in other places to be considered for aid, as others have pointed out.

However, we should shift any further discussion of finaid over to the Class of 2018 thread: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 5&t=241255

Current average from the spreadsheet is ~90 days from complete to decision, but most of those are JS2s. There were a reasonable number of dings on LSN a while back, but they're not well-represented in the spreadsheet. No WL yet, and given how different this cycle has been from previous cycles, I doubt we can predict with any accuracy when those will start happening.

I, too, am anxiously waiting every day, but have not felt this way about any other school lol.

What about the average time from JS1 to JS2? wouldn't that be a bit more informative than the time from complete to JS2?

also, what's so funny about Northwestern?

JS1 to JS2 is 48.9 days on average so far; I expect it to get somewhat shorter now that JS2s seem to be picking up, since the long waits from the October/November JS1s are bringing the average up.
curlietop86 wrote:re: northwestern, not sure what strugglebus specifically referenced, but i would surmise it's referencing their extremely delayed decision cycle this year. there's been a lot of angst on that thread about decision dates.
This; personally found it amusing b/c I'm also only waiting on a few schools besides NU and because they keep missing their self-imposed deadlines for giving us decisions.

how does everyone feel about their chances? different from when the cycle started?

for those of us who had an early js1, we've clearly been passed over. that's not to say they won't go back, and i definitely think they will, but am just curious to see how people are feeling. i'm trying to stay optimistic: even though i've been passed over in all the waves, most of the people who have been accepted had better numbers than me. they'll get to applicants with my numbers eventually (hopefully).

Do JS1 interviews still happen when the office is closed, or do they reschedule?

worth noting, as some modicum of encouragement, that while they haven't scooped you up yet i think your lack of a ding is pretty telling as well. if you submitted a long time ago and you're still around my guess is that's because they wanted to see how the applicant pool would shape up. still totally possible that good news is on its way.

basically, don't feel too bad yet. i remember when i applied last year they pulled up alot of long-time waiters in late March. it could happen again. :D

Just to add to this. I think we all easily forget that there is a lot more that goes into this process than we understand so this whole "I was passed up" mentality is probably not correct. They gave you an interview which means they really like your application. They are far too busy to waste time like that. Also, this cycle is odd because of the fewer applicants and such so they are considering all sorts of scenarios. We are way too early in the year to let doubt creep in.

Hey guys, what is TCR as it relates to what you can have in front of you during the JS1 interview? Would having your resume and a blank page to write down notes be appropriate? What would not be appropriate? Thanks!

Congrats on the JS1! You shouldn't have any need for notes, their questions are short enough that you don't really need to take anything down. You could have your resume there, but really you should probably know it well enough to be able to talk about anything on it without referencing the text. Not sure it would hurt you to have it, just seems like with adequate preparation you wouldn't need it.

More important than either of those is having questions ready for your interviewer about programs or other things that interest you at HLS. I'd prepare three, although you probably will only need two. Good luck!

My JS1 lasted about 20 min, more than half of which was spent on my questions. The interviewer's questions lasted only about 8-9 minutes. I'd be prepared w/ 5+ just in case.

My interview was barely over 10 min, and I only asked two questions; got the JS2 two weeks later. Moral of the story is that there's no one right way to interview. Do enough research to feel comfortable talking about yourself, your academic/career plans, and HLS. Profit. (:

EDIT: Of course, it's always better to be overprepared than underprepared!
