Got a scholarship email today asking me to apply for $$$. Georgetown is definitely still a school I'm considering, but not too much. Would it be totally unethical to apply for the $$$ in order to barter with other schools?

Dude, do what's best for you. There are no ethics that come into play when you're talking about LS levels of debt.digifly wrote:Got a scholarship email today asking me to apply for $$$. I just received the Merit Scholarship Consideration email as well. It claims "because of your achievements, academic and otherwise, you are among a select group of our admitted students that the Committee on Scholarship would like to consider for possible scholarship funding." I wonder what percentage of admits receive this and if it really is very "select?"digifly wrote:Got a scholarship email today asking me to apply for $$$. They want a reply by Monday 2/4 and say, "It also would be helpful to the Committee’s deliberations if you could provide us with some updated information. We know it’s early, but we are interested in knowing such things as where Georgetown fits into your thinking and what level of funding would make a difference in your decision."
I'm really not sure what to say to that!
No. That never happens with GULC.papichulo wrote:did anyone status change to decision?

For what it's worth, we have similar stats and I didn't receive that email. I hope there's still a chance for some merit aid along the way for those that didn't receive this email...risa wrote:I just received the Merit Scholarship Consideration email as well. Also just received the scholarship e-mail. It seems like receiving a merit award shortens the runway for making a decision.
"For those students who are offered merit scholarship awards, the response deadline will be in early April."
Hmmm.

Well, if it means I would get 10k more from UVA but I tie up 100k for one of you guys at Gtown, I think ethics are involved. No worries, though. I'm probably too lazy to do this anyway.LRGhost wrote:Dude, do what's best for you. But you already got $135K from UVA, which is an almost full scholarship from a better ranked school. So I don't think applying for Gtown money would likely give you an edge in negotiating, unless I guess you get $150K. And people claim Gtown is stingy, so I'm not sure the odds are too high.
The highest reported Georgetown scholarship on LSN last year was $135K (by only one person). So yeah, I don't think it's worth it to apply in your case, even disregarding the ethical issue.

If you don't get the email, I wonder if that means you aren't under consideration for merit scholarships? I am an extreme splitter, so I didn't exactly expect money, but I was hoping that my high LSAT might be worth some $$$ this cycle.
I got 90k from Fordham, which I know isn't exactly a peer school. Would this be a good time to let them know that?

I just got the merit scholarship email too. Any advice on how to ask for a full ride? Whats a professional way to say that without also sounding like I'm not really considering Gtown without a lot of money?

Yeah I have 75k from USC and 70k from UCLA I'm wondering when is the best time for me to let them know that as well. I'm expecting something decent from Vandy later this month so it might be better for me to wait and present all three at once...pedestrian wrote:If you don't get the email, I wonder if that means you aren't under consideration for merit scholarships? I thought I'd have a shot at at least some $$ from Gtown since it seems like they'll desperately be trying to hold on to that 169 median with apps down (I'm a 169 with about median GPA).

I was wondering as well whether this is an appropriate time to put other schools' offers on the table... I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by low-balling, but nor do I want to sound too disinterested with a "make me your best offer and then we'll talk" kinda response.

The money isn't tied up since if you get a better scholarship, you'd withdraw and funds would go out to someone else, or you'd matriculate and yolo. But yeah, if you already have near full scholly at UVA, I don't know that a full scholly from GULC is gonna bump it up dude. Nevertheless, I would do it. Just my opinion, of course.digifly wrote:Well, if it means I would get 10k more from UVA but I tie up 100k for one of you guys at Gtown, I think ethics are involved. No worries, though. Same here. Wondering... I got an excellent offer from UCLA and quite decent offers from Michigan and UT. Not sure if I should mention these to GULC. But the email does sound like they are specifically asking for these info...risa wrote:I was wondering as well whether this is an appropriate time to put other schools' offers on the table... They're all but outright asking you where else you'd like to go besides GULC that you've been accepted to and what they can do to be #1 in your process.BlackadderIn wrote:Same here. Wondering... Also got the email. The deadline is rather quick--I don't know if I can know in three days whether Georgetown is a serious consideration. And it definitely won't be without something like a full ride....I have no idea how to politely put that in an email.

Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
So, so far I have been accepted into UVA, GULC, GW and BC......out of those four, i'm really only considering UVA and GULC, and am still (without much hope anymore, since my apps went complete in mid-November) waiting to hear from Stanford, Columbia, Boalt and NYU. I was thinking of emailing GULC to ask about how their merit-aid process works, in hope that I would be able to use an offer from them in order to bargain a little with UVA (UVA Director of Admissions even encouraged me when I spoke with him on the phone to notify them of other offers I receive). However, after seeing the posts today about merit scholarship emails going out, and having not received one of those emails yet, would you guys think it's safe to say that any hope for merit aid from GULC is now basically gone? In other words, do you think these emails all went out en masse or are they slowly rolling out?
Also, just to vent even though no one really cares haha, but I've been kicking myself for not taking the LSAT a second time. Scored a 171 on my only take but had been consistently getting 175+ on practice tests including a perfect score five days before I took the real test. Hoping that not taking it a second time wasn't a $x0,000+ mistake, but starting to think now that it was

I wouldn't be surprised if a second batch goes out after they hear back, given the quick response time they're asking foroldschool123 wrote:So, so far I have been accepted into UVA, GULC, GW and BC......out of those four, i'm really only considering UVA and GULC, and am still (without much hope anymore, since my apps went complete in mid-November) waiting to hear from Stanford, Columbia, Boalt and NYU. Appreciate the response (and optimism). Keeping fingers crossed that this is the case, and I guess at this point the only thing to do is be patient and wait and seeninetails wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if a second batch goes out after they hear back, given the quick response time they're asking foroldschool123 wrote:So, so far I have been accepted into UVA, GULC, GW and BC......out of those four, i'm really only considering UVA and GULC, and am still (without much hope anymore, since my apps went complete in mid-November) waiting to hear from Stanford, Columbia, Boalt and NYU. also just got a scholarship e-mail though it seems to be a different one to those posted on the previous page. mine didn't say anything about a "select group" but rather that I would add to the diversity at the school (I'm not URM but international). same deadline for a response though ...
do you reckon not being sent the "select group" e-mail is a bad sign?

I have some acceptances but no scholarship offers yet. Also wondering how to ask for significant amount of money in a polite way.

Got the scholarship email. Sort of awkward in my opinion, but I suppose I appreciate their candor. I have a full ride to Northwestern and I told them straight up that unless I receive a proportionally significant offer from them it wasn't gonna happen.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
