1) The Palomino Blackwing 602 is a god among pencils. I'm considering throwing caution to the wind and using it on the LSAT, despite it not being an official #2. It's that good.
2) The Palomino HB is quite nice, and may beat out my current favorite, the Mirado Black Warrior (which itself beats out the garbage that is the black Ticonderoga). This may end up being my test day pencil, since it's officially HB (which is basically equivalent to #2, as far as I understand).
Neither the Golden Bear nor the Prospector particularly wowed me. Prospector had similar problems to Ticonderogas (finicky about sharpening/tendency to lose its tip), and while the lead of the Golden Bear was nice, its eraser was enough to rule it out as a test day contender.
Good review. I did some bubble sheet testing with the 602 and my other #2 pencils and held them over an led floodlight, and they all seem to darken the same, but it would be nice to bring something to the test with an officially accepted grade of lead. The Golden Bear seems like a good standard pencil like the Ticonderogas and I like the finish better, but I think writing with the 602 has spoiled me with laying down those silky lines. I'll be ordering some of those HBs to have the mix of premium quality and conformity. The pencils.com comparison chart (LinkRemoved) says the HB and the 602 both have "premium" graphite, and since HB = #2 and the scantrons like
the one Dre posted say "USE ONLY NO. 2 OR HB PENCIL," it will be a safe backup in case the pencil enforcer checks my bag and takes the god pencils.
