Planting that seed at law firms is important in itself. You could wind up going back during 1L and applying for a summer associate position, which would help you at 2L placement, and potentially a permanent legal job. Those people know you (presumably). They trust you enough to do meaningful tasks for someone who's not even in law school yet.

P.S.

I wouldn't buy into the idea that any type of job pre law school suffices. Employers do not like to see a list of entry level retail/fast food gigs. Why? Your resume will show no upward progression, no ambition, and they will wonder if you have ever seen the inside of a law firm. You have proven otherwise.
