The current dean Rasmussen will still be on the faculty along with his wife. They're not going anywhere. The new dean takes over in the fall.

I was told he is taking a one year sabbatical then coming back to teach after that.MikeJD wrote:The current dean Rasmussen will still be on the faculty along with his wife. They're not going anywhere. The new dean takes over in the fall.

Re: USC (Gould) c/o 2018
Does it make any difference if I reserve my scholarship asap or on 4/14, whaddaya think?
I can see how
IF now I can get them to start talking. One downside may be that I "look" like I am going to matriculate even if they don't give me more money.
IF closer to 4/15 it can make them nervous. One downside may be that it may "look" like I am not interested in matriculating.
How are you all doing this?

Would reserving the scholly hurt your leverage? Are you locking yourself in at that number essentially?LawsRUs wrote:Does it make any difference if I reserve my scholarship asap or on 4/14, whaddaya think?

Re: USC (Gould) c/o 2018
Wait sorry can I backstep a little bit?
So what do you think the purpose of this reservation form is? Separate people who are and are not interested in matriculating since USC's first depo deadline is not until late? Or trying to give those who are still waiting on their decision more money? Or giving people above both 75%iles more money after 4/15?
If that's the purpose, is it best to do it now?!?

Re: USC (Gould) c/o 2018
obviously since I'm not an admissions officer I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I seriously doubt the point of the scholarship reservation form is so they can give even more money to people who have already decided to reserve their scholarships. Like you said it's probably so they can get a sense of who's matriculating and who's not, so they can make WL offers or whatever.
Also I've read that some schools purposely give out more scholly money than they have because they know not everyone will accept their offer. So it's not like every time an offer is declined more scholly money is put back into circulation (if that makes sense)

So the meat of our negotiations comes after 4/15?
I better get my offers ready by then!!
Thanks for that insight btw, it helps a lot.

Re: USC (Gould) c/o 2018
I still think the reserve but consider other schools option is the best way to go, and hit them with a negotiation letter on the deadline date. You'll be in the forefront of their minds right as they're starting to get an idea of how much money is coming back to them, this increases big time once deposit deadlines hit. I think the earlier form is also about forcing those with schollys to give the school some kind of update. People may have deposited elsewhere and not taken the time to withdraw from USC.LawsRUs wrote:So the meat of our negotiations comes after 4/15?

Re: USC (Gould) c/o 2018
So the UCLA dean is stepping down when they find a new one but no replacement has been found yet. I find this more unsettling than USC having a brand new dean, because at least this guy is being prepped and will start with us at the beginning of the year.

Deans come and go, they get replaced faster than ever these days. Rasmussen probably got the axe probably because USC fell from 18 to 20 but I think they will get back to 18 next year cause of smaller classes and better job numbers for class of 2014. As far as UCLA goes I'm not sure why they replaced their dean though, no apparent problems there.

She's choosing not to take another 4 year term. It's just a lot of transition for this school because they're in the middle of a massive campaign to essentially revamp everything in 5 years.MikeJD wrote:Deans come and go, they get replaced faster than ever these days. ETA: revamp that starts with one dean's ideas and then a new one comes in sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Yikes about UCLA's search for new dean. A bit disconcerting..(A corny analogy: Like a ship without a captain)

Even scarier, a boat with a captain that wants to jump ship.LawsRUs wrote:Yikes about UCLA's search for new dean. A bit disconcerting..(A corny analogy: Like a ship without a captain)
EXCELLENT CHOICE!!!! I don't know if the attendance numbers will be as intimate as in NYC but 100% worth it, get there early if you can so you can monopolize the staff. I regret not talking to Chloe Reid more since she does the admitting and probably has a lot of say in scholarships. I did briefly speak to her but then Dean R swooped in, gonna note that in the negotiation letter I have drafted. Just have to add the personal touches from the reception and i'm going to send it out. I made sure to speak with the dean of admits&fin aid at UCLA after realizing my mistake with USC, he encouraged me to send him a negotiation!!! CURVEBALL!LawsRUs wrote:I'm registered for the reception in SF!! Last day to RSVP is today!! See some of you there??
No problem, thanks for being an excellent OP! Hope the scholly negotiations are going well!LawsRUs wrote:Also thanks mec..for everthing in general
Edit because everything is hard after 3 days in NYC with very little sleep, especially words

Sent letters. I was waiting until after the east coast receptions so I could reference discussions with them in the letters.MikeJD wrote:mec896 wrote:First negotiation letter sent. I will keep everyone posted.

This escalated very quickly into a turf war over neighborhoods. Some TLSers are so unhelpful/unable to see past USNWR.
Maybe I should post in the ask a law student section?

Equal money = UCLA unless for some reason you just didn't get a good vibe.. But if USC gives you more money, USC is the obvious answer.. That's about it.
