William & Mary Class of 2018
Good chance I'll be in Williamsburg in the fall, so I figured I'd start the thread. Anyone already planning on attending?

It's certainly an option for me. But I just submitted my application today. Are you already in?

Yeah, I've already been accepted. I'm in state, so W&M is a great option financially for me.JMWZ wrote:It's certainly an option for me. But I just submitted my application today. Are you already in?

I'm in Minnesota, so I'm hoping after my first year I'd be able to get residency. Is that possible in Virginia?Kaizen428 wrote:Yeah, I've already been accepted. My first choice is the University of Minnesota, but that might be a stretch for me to get into.

All I know is that to become a VA resident you have to live in VA for 183 days of the taxable year. They don't have to be consecutive.JMWZ wrote:I'm in Minnesota, so I'm hoping after my first year I'd be able to get residency. I was accepted by W&M last year with scores within the 50th percentile for both categories. They offered me a graduate fellowship, which basically sounded like spending a few hours in the library every week, but the position automatically granted resident tuition rates from day one. They also tacked on a scholarship of a few thousand dollars as well. As far as their applicant pool as a whole, I was nothing special.JMWZ wrote:I'm in Minnesota, so I'm hoping after my first year I'd be able to get residency. In today, very excited to have the chance to attend!
Not committed yet, still waiting on other decisions, but it's certainly an option I'm seriously considering!

Hi guys! Does anyone have thoughts on how receptive W&M is to scholarship negotiations? I really, really want to go but I just got an offer for a full ride from Washington & Lee and I'm not sure that I can justify the 35K price difference between that and what W&M offered me. My soul hurts a little bit trying to figure this out.
Also, anyone know when is the best time to start negotiations?

vdh2102, I sent you a PM.
I'm in the same boat.
Will post any new empirical data as it comes in. Hopefully I was a good boy and Santa makes it rain on this ho (me).

Any updates re (a) whether anyone has had luck negotiating scholarships, or (b) whether anyone who applied for the special fellowships has heard anything?

I got an email a few weeks ago stating that they will be making decisions on special fellowships by mid February and they will continue to make decisions through late spring and early summer. I was waiting to hear from the fellowship before I start negotiating.vdh2102 wrote:Any updates re (a) whether anyone has had luck negotiating scholarships, or (b) whether anyone who applied for the special fellowships has heard anything?

Well, I tried.
W&M Admissions folks were very professional but they said they couldn't increase my scholarship.
Looks like I'll be at Washington and Lee for $NOMONIES/yr tuition.

Did anyone who went to the ASW think the session on the Career Services Office was a missed opportunity? The guy talked about LinkedIn for 30 minutes when all I wanted to know was what his office did, what resources they offer, and how the interaction works with students. He seemed like a nice guy so I feel bad being disappointed.

Re: William & Mary Class of 2018
Hi everyone, just wanted to share my info. I was admitted back in November and am at/above 75ths, and asked for a bump in scholarship after receiving my Northwestern and WashU Offers. They gave me a slight bump of 2k/year more, which brings me to 37/year (out of state). Seems they want to stay just short of full tuition.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
