That's pretty consistent with last year when our 10% cut off was 3.79. If that is the case, then I think it may be fair to say that the curve likely looks bimodal. Or pretty close to it.Derp2016 wrote:Just called and asked - Dean's List cutoff was 3.625.

So basically instead of everyone getting a B+, a bunch got fucked with Bs and B-'s? Ouch.runthetrap1990 wrote:That's pretty consistent with last year when our 10% cut off was 3.79. Re: Cornell Class of 2018
I thought of it more as the school gives out this % of As, in past years, most students in the top 10% got some B+s and A-s mixed in with their As, bringing their overall GPA down. However, its possible that this year, the top 10% of students just got mostly all As instead of mixing it with lower grades.
So, I don't necessarily think that it is required that more people got Bs and B-s, but that students which would normally get a couple As mixed in with their more median grades just didn't get those As this year.

Yea, I doubt more B's / B-'s were given out. Assuming top 30 and median are similar to previous years, then I'd guess the top 10% jumped because more A's / A+'s were given out. Also probably has something to do with smaller class sizes, if only because that's one of the more obvious changing variables between our class and previous ones.

Re: Cornell Class of 2018
Anyone know if they'll tell you the median if you ask?
Edit: I just called and asked, but looks like they couldn't say. They said that the mean is typically 3.35 like always and that the acceptable range is 3.2-3.5 but that it tends to sway a little bit more towards the 3.5 end. So essentially I didn't find out anything new.

Aside from self-esteem, do changes in the median/30%/10%/5% matter? It's not like firms interview the whole class or that the jump is so drastic that a firm will interview 60 students with a 3.8+. Won't firms just go by the same GPA targets/cut-offs as previous years?

Re: Cornell Class of 2018
Because it is a bidding system, firms won't actually know your GPA until the school submits your resume to them (way after you already have an interview with them). The actual selection happens (1) when students choose firms that are closer to their GPA and (2) when the interviewers chooses who to CB after the initial interview. That's for the regular AJF bidding. Outside of that, they probably follow previous year's trends.WeeBey wrote:Aside from self-esteem, do changes in the median/30%/10%/5% matter? Re: Cornell Class of 2018
The biggest difference will that, if firms continue to hire the relative same number of Cornell SAs, the GPA ranges for callbacks those firms will be slightly misleading. If 40 people screen with, e.g., S&C (relatively GPA-conscious), and they plan on calling back 20, then the GPA needed to get a callback will be misleading.WeeBey wrote:Aside from self-esteem, do changes in the median/30%/10%/5% matter? Looks like they amended the grading policy - the 10% cutoff for class of 2018 is now down to 3.833.

I wonder if what was previously reported was the 5% mark.

Well I'm not going to complain about the reduction, that original cutoff was rough.

Any supplement recommendations for Ohlin or Underkuffler?

For Ohlin, Understanding Criminal Law by Joshua Dressler is probably the best. For Underkuffler, I liked the Gilberts for general stuff and Estates and Land and Future Interests by Linda Edwards for practicing future interests. I know people who liked Understanding Property Law by John Sprankling as well.smiles123 wrote:Any supplement recommendations for Ohlin or Underkuffler?

hmm what about if you have Colb? she's using Ohlin's textbook which just got published recently.. Dressler supp still viable?LundWashington wrote:For Ohlin, Understanding Criminal Law by Joshua Dressler is probably the best. Probably. I just looked at the table of contents for Ohlin's book and it seems more holistic, with less of an emphasis on the distinction between the MPC and common law, but I imagine it will still be important and it's not like there's a credited supp designed to go with Ohlin's book.hodzdoh wrote:hmm what about if you have Colb? she's using Ohlin's textbook which just got published recently.. Re: Cornell Class of 2018
would suggest two things for her MC portion: 1) jot down any relevant policy discussions she has in class, including student input that she ends up putting on the board, 2) get a Q&A supplement and maybe a Siegel's multiple choice book.hodzdoh wrote:Im pretty confident she said it was half and half..runthetrap1990 wrote:Is Colb's exam all multiple choice or is she doing essays and stuff?hodzdoh wrote: hmm what about if you have Colb? she's using Ohlin's textbook which just got published recently.. Like Lavitz said, I still think Dressler's hornbook is good to have. That being said, i guess wait and see how she teaches the class.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
