you should probably call them "Dillard Scholars" when asking around; most people in the law school use "Dillard" to refer to "Dillard Fellows" which are not the same thing.

I believe 1L Dillard Scholars get a $5K stipend and a faculty mentor (in addition to the full tuition scholarship) but I could be wrong on that.

It's actually pretty hard to get an A- in the Shadel/Sayler rhetoric/oral presentations classes. It's pretty easy to get a B+, but I don't think they give out many A-'s at all. That's even more true for Balnave's PR. You don't have to spend a ton of time on those classes, so it might help with do better on other classes.

Not particularly noteworthy either way. You'll probably go through a lot of material but none of it is terribly confusing.

you won't learn it from those and you won't need it for your summer.

secured transactions is pretty shitty and banking is kind of a nightmare. spread em out.

I'd like to take a 4 credit class for my 3L spring since it would make my schedule otherwise awesome. I'd like to enjoy last semester, I'll only be taking one "real" class. What do you think about these choices:

Federal Income Tax (with Mason)

Con Law II: Civil Liberties (with Laycock)

I know Laycock is a big deal, but are his classes fun/engaging? Is this a gunner course?

I've heard Mason is a good professor, but if I have no interest or background in tax, would that be a waste of time? I am not really math phobic, but I often get very, very bored and zone out when classes get highly technical about matters that have no interest to me (e.g., property).

laycock's dryer than a mitchell, but i find him pretty amusing. the content in that class should be better than tax too. he attracts some gunners but it's 3L who cares?

For various reasons, this is actually a plus for me. So long as the class is interesting, and not super demanding. Which I'm not sure about.

yeah, i disagree. not on the bar (NY anyway) and unless you're going into tax you won't ever really use it. there are tax specialists for that sort of thing, your job is just to coordinate with them and have them look at it.

Or you can put your head in the sand and hand it off to "specialists," whatever works.

one semester of fed income tax is not the difference between needing a specialist and not, soo..

op, i took tax. it's solid, but i think mostly because it gives you a lot of practice working through statutes. that puts a different lens on policy arguments, and iirc that's why teachers like coughlin and abraham suggested tax so strongly when we were 1Ls at that class picking advice thing in caplin auditorium. if you've dealt with statutory bodies of law before, i'd worry more about whether you liked that part of those classes than tax being a Class You Should Take.

1L - log into lawweb and click lawreg. then click 1L lottery instructions. basically you go into lawreg and click drop downs. put classes that you want the most at the top and others at the bottom. then you wait about a month and boom, you have a schedule

I did this. SO worked 4 days a week in DC, would Amtrak up Monday mornings and down Thursdays. We only did this 1L, but it worked out well--let me do the fun-with-section thing early in semesters, and the 1L-study later on, without too much negative effects on my S/O. Hard part is finding an affordable living situation in DC to make this work.
