I always thought it would be funny for your insurance to be a brand new laptop in a box, but I don't think anybody pulled the trigger.

If you're going for a mac it's not nearly as egregious.
This thought actually crossed my mind as well.
Y'know, an even better version of this plan is to have the second laptop in a box at Best Buy. Seriously, it's down the street. You could have a back-up computer within an hour if necessary. Why spend a bunch of extra money if you don't have to?

The laptop/netbook combo is also credited. I have a 17" laptop that I used first semester. It was great but bulky, and my wife's laptop was petering out, so I bought a 10" netbook right before spring semester started. Now I use the netbook during the semester, and I borrow the laptop from the wifey for finals.

The impression I got was that there are laptops waiting there for you in case your shit won't start up or something. It's a highly improbable scenario, but if it did happen, are you going to have time to run to Best Buy? I've had a bunch of shit break on me at crucial times and that type of situation makes me unreasonably paranoid, so if I didn't do the Mac bundle I would probably do like you did and have my 17 inch and a netbook combo and bring both of them to exams.

I think I'm just looking for an excuse to signal to everyone that I'm a unique person with excellent taste in music by getting a Mac.

I suspect my future gpa would prefer I had a laptop that cannot run games.

There's nothing better than that sense of satisfaction you get by standing out from the crowd and owning a Mac. Think Different!

video games are good for law school. my advice is play games until November 15th and then you'll be so refreshed you can work for a month. rinse and repeat for the Spring

Since law school began, I have (a) beat all but four songs on expert on Guitar Hero III, (b) beat GTA IV, (c) beat Starcraft II on brutal, (d) leveled to 87 in Diablo II, (e) beat Oblivion, (f) beat Call of Duty: Black Ops, and (g) leveled to 85 in World of Warcraft. And my GPA hasn't suffered.
Wait, I thought you weren't going to check grades.

The LR cut off varies every year from liek 3.68-3.72-ish, is that right?

It's usually 3.71-3.75, but has gone as high as 3.79 if I recall correctly. If you're between a 3.7 and a 3.8, enjoy the month of suspense!

Historically it has been around the low 3.7s, supposedly, but the last two years it has been a bit higher, around 3.76-ish (unless someone can correct me).

It would suck to be at the wrong side of the cut off. Though as a functional concern if someone had say a 3.7 and didn't make LR, would his success at OGI vary significantly from someone who had a 3.73 and made LR? I'd imagine theres difference at the margins with like W/C and S/C and success at Art 3 clerkships but otherwise is there a huge difference?

Law Review is huge for clerkships, but for people who just miss the cutoff, the only firm that is probably off limits is Cravath. W&C and S&C both extended offers to people who did not make Law Review last year. Those who get a 3.70 will still win at life.

The notable downside about having a netbook in class, of course, is that it raises your chances of having multiple teachers stop in the middle of lectures and note in amazement how small your computer is.

It's always awkward when a professor stops and stares at you and says "I've never seen one that small"

Quoted so that it will be here for ever and ever and ever. It'll come up in the judiciary committee hearing when you're nominated for something and I'm going to be all "I am so glad I quoted that."

No.

No it would not.

Being just slightly on the wrong side of the cutoff would be the best thing that could happen to a law student.

Ha, I believe it was something like that.

Also, I guess I should celebrate. It seems like today was the day Con Law exams were finally printed out. I thought "No Documents Found" meant something was wrong, but I guess that finally means every Professors getting to work. Hooray, or something.
