What the title says. Can many textbooks be downloaded and read on tablets/should they? That kind of stuff.

Yeah this is a bad idea. Highlighting is difficult, harder to read for long periods, battery life issues, etc.

I saw a guy try it for the first couple weeks.... and then he broke down and bought a laptop.

In general they are moderately useful but mostly a luxury. For law school they are mostly useless. As laptop substitutes, under any circumstance, they are insane.

I agree that tablets suck for law school. But I like the idea of downloading books. I did this for a few classes last semester, and it worked really well. There are downsides though, such as the inability to resell your books and having to find a hardcopy to use in the final.

Marginally useful but not viable as a replacement for either a laptop or traditional casebooks.

I knew a girl who used it to ostensibly take notes in class, but she was really just surfing the web. But that's what everyone else is doing anyway, so it doesn't really matter. You should probably also have a laptop, but if you can afford an extra toy, why not? It'd be a lot easier for when you're a 2L/3L and in seminars without casebooks. You can just bring a small handbag to class and slip a tablet into your bag without having to carry around a bulky backpack and feel like a 10th grader all over again. Or I guess you could get an 11" notebook.
