Incoming college freshman. What can I do?
I will be attending Hunter CUNY college in NYC this upcoming fall. I want to dedicate my life to being a successful lawyer. I will be interning at the Manhattan Attorney General's Office this summer.
Can you guys give me ANY advice as to what else I should be working on or how I should behave during my internship? Any books I should read? It's just that since you're all currently law students, there must be some things you wish you did earlier. Should I start studying for the LSATS now? Or just completely focus on my GPA?
I'm just anxious about starting my journey.

Re: Incoming college freshman. What can I do?
The biggest early mistake I made in my legal career is that I didn't chose the right name early enough.
Lots of lawyers go by their first initial, then middle name, then last name. Like W. Maximillion Cadwalader instead of Willie M. Cadwalader.
Really common among lawyers though, not sure why, but I should have done it. Right before college would be the perfect time to transition too, since you make all new friends.

Chill. You don't even know if you'll want to be a lawyer in 4 years.

Focus on your GPA and on having a good time in college.

I would like to start working my ass off towards becoming one so that if I start to hate it, I could give it up early to transition to a different career choice.bk187 wrote:Chill. You don't even know if you'll want to be a lawyer in 4 years.

Pick a major that could get you a job without law school (eg supply chain or accounting).FineGentleman wrote:I would like to start working my ass off towards becoming one so that if I start to hate it, I could give it up early to transition to a different career choice.bk187 wrote:Chill. I would not be able to obtain a very high gpa as an accounting major. I have been thinking of majoring in political science.ImNoScar wrote:Pick a major that could get you a job without law school (eg supply chain or accounting).FineGentleman wrote:I would like to start working my ass off towards becoming one so that if I start to hate it, I could give it up early to transition to a different career choice.bk187 wrote:Chill. Choose Psych or Comm as your major. Join a frat (top tier only tho). Find out what goes down faster than an anchor and why. Get a 3.9. Take the LSAT. Retake the LSAT. Enjoy Columbia.ImNoScar wrote:Pick a major that could get you a job without law school (eg supply chain or accounting).FineGentleman wrote:I would like to start working my ass off towards becoming one so that if I start to hate it, I could give it up early to transition to a different career choice.bk187 wrote:Chill. You'll find out soon enough. Enjoy college my friend. You have the rest of your life to become a lawyer. You only get 4 years of college. Get a good GPA and enjoy your time.FineGentleman wrote:

These "what advance preparation can I do" thread OPs are getting younger and younger.

Accounting isn't that hard. If you're going to struggle academically as an accounting major, then law school might be rough. (yea yea I know that UG is way different than LS, but accounting is not one of the toughest majors)FineGentleman wrote:I would not be able to obtain a very high gpa as an accounting major. you're barely older than himMonochromatic Oeuvre wrote:Forgive me for a question that is particularly specific to my situation, but regarding OGI: I'm K-JD and a relatively young one at that (I don't turn 21 for a couple more months), so my resume isn't super-deep. Major in something that will get you a job. (Hint: if it isn't in the below list, it won't get you a job)
- Computer science/computer engineering/computer systems engineering
Electrical engineering
Some other engineering majors (i.e. probably chemical, probably not civil)
Computer information systems
Nursing
Accounting
Supply chain management

It would be very hard to get a 3.9GPA in those majors...buddyt wrote:Major in something that will get you a job. (Hint: if it isn't in the below list, it won't get you a job)Don't let your GPA slip below 3.9. Get a job after graduation. If you still want to be a lawyer, get a 173+ on the LSAT.
