I think it's pretty safe to assume that there are hundreds of apps for all judges everywhere.Anonymous User wrote:Are these #s for on-plan judges who stuck to the June 28 deadline, or were they off-plan who were accepting earlier? I've heard of hundreds of apps for on-plan judges, but have no clue what the #s are for flyovers who are off-plan.

Re: Let's Talk 8th Circuit!
bumping this thread & checking in. Any pointers/advice from previous 8th Cir. applicants? I know it's probably early, but when do most 8th Cir. judges start moving on applications for the 2015 term? Have any started interviewing?

And even then it's no cakewalk. It's insanely rough.Anonymous User wrote:I'm near the top of the class at the best school in the area (take that however you will) and had 3 people working on him for me. Nothing. It's just rough out there if you aren't top 10% at HYS.Anonymous User wrote:Nice email from Benton's chambers saying he's done. 500+ applications for 3 openings.

I believe Judge Murphy has one spot remaining for 2015-16.Anonymous User wrote:bumping this thread & checking in. Any pointers/advice from previous 8th Cir. applicants? Murphy is done for 2015-16, and has hired at least one for 2016-17, still has some openings for 2016-17 (as of one week ago)Anonymous User wrote:I believe Judge Murphy has one spot remaining for 2015-16.Anonymous User wrote:bumping this thread & checking in. Reviving this thread to request any and all information on Eighth Circuit judges' hiring practices, work environments, reputations, etc.

Re: Let's Talk 8th Circuit!
I'm no expert, but I know some things that can kick the revival off. I really only know about some of the Fed Soc-y judges in the northern part of the circuit. Nothing I've heard indicates that clerking with anyone in the circuit is playing with fire a la Kozinski, but I really know nothing significant about any but these four so maybe there's a terror in Arkansas or something.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 5:51 pmReviving this thread to request any and all information on Eighth Circuit judges' hiring practices, work environments, reputations, etc.
Judge Colloton: As previous posts attest, word on the street is that he works his clerks hard and he's not a good mentor. A student at my school had an interview with him that was apparently pretty political. He does have a national reputation and qualifications that can match anyone's, though, unlike most Eighth Circuit judges. He hires starting after 1L and continues until he's full (he appears from OSCAR to have only recently wrapped up 2021, so he's pretty slow). Des Moines is a nice place to live.
Judge Gruender: He has a particularly strong reputation for his legal writing. I believe that he always has two two-year clerks and two one-year clerks, which is unusual for a federal appellate judge. My assumption is that the two-year terms are less competitive but that might be wrong. I think that ties to Missouri are a significant plus for him. I haven't heard anything about what kind of a boss he is. St. Louis is obviously one of the major cities in the circuit.
Judge Kobes: He had a very controversial confirmation but I have heard very good things about him personally. His NQ rating seemed pretty unjustified. From a future clerk I believe that he is fairly ideologically flexible and not tie-sensitive. Like Colloton, he starts the summer after 1L but takes a while to get full. Sioux Falls isn't great and is very far from the fun western part of South Dakota, but at least it's sort of a city.
Judge Stras: The recent thoughts on him in the "Best and worst judges to work for" thread aligns with what I know. He's a great talker, he's the most selective judge in the circuit (probably by a lot), and he's a deep thinker with some interesting thoughts on the law; check out his opinion on originalism and the scope of injunctions. He hires very quickly like most top Fed Soc judges. Minneapolis is the best city in the circuit if you don't mind the cold.
