Financial Aid will take for-bloody-ever to go through. Don't expect anything until classes start.

Once you get your log in, you can track your fin aid on their website. It'll let you know that they have everything and what's going on.

Re: SMU Class of 2015
If anyone is looking to sell some books I will be in the evening program (section 3) and will be looking for books for the following classes...
Civil Procedure - Martinez
Torts - Pryor
Contracts - Taylor
Legal Writing (not really sure what I need for this class)
Send me a PM if you are looking to sell... also, if I messed up looking at the schedule/listing classes let me know!

Re: SMU Class of 2015
So I'm from out of state and have visited the area to check out apartments. We really liked The Village and thought we were set on it, but their prices have steadily been climbing and it looks like it's gonna be close to $1,000 for a 2B by the end of July. This is extremely irritating. I may ultimately bite the bullet and rent there anyway, but wanted to see if anyone was familiar with either Amesbury Parc or Amesbury Townhomes. They don't look as nice, but are in the same neighborhood and a bit cheaper like $825-850. Am I making a mistake here? Please advise.

Re: SMU Class of 2015
I am from out of state too, and my fiance is from Texas so I had him check out apartments around SMU when he went down there to visit family. He ended up liking Amesbury Parc apartments, and we rented out a 1BR there. He said the area is really nice and the apartments are older, but worth the location and price. We also only signed a 7 month lease so we could move out if we weren't satisfied and move when rent prices were lower. The staff was really friendly and has been really nice to work with. The village was getting too expensive for us too :/
But I also have not seen them personally, but have heard pretty good things so far.

Re: SMU Class of 2015
I've got a question for the current students who frequent this thread. I understand that Class of 2011 for most schools saw drops in employment figures. A lot of people say that is a delayed effect of the state of the legal market in 2009 or so. My question is how are things looking for Class of 2012 and 2013?
For this coming summer what percentage of 1Ls were able to get meaningful internships (paid or unpaid)? What sort of grades were needed?
For this coming summer what percentage of 2Ls were able to get paid SA positions? Grades?
Just curious if 2011 was an aberration and things are on the up and up.

I think 2011 is the low point. I don't have percentages, but a lot of people have some sort of paying gig for this summer.

Re: SMU Class of 2015
I know this has been briefly discussed, but when are fellow out-of-staters planning on making the move down to Dallas and locking in an apartment? I was thinking about moving 1-3 August. Does anyone think that will be too late to get a decently priced apartment (1br/1ba, <$750) biking distance from SMU?

The relocation center agent at the Village Apartments said that come August, the least expensive efficiency apartments there will be over $700/mo. and the 1bd apartments will be over $800/mo., if there are any available at all. She said the rents go up as the semester gets closer.zx92027xz wrote:I know this has been briefly discussed, but when are fellow out-of-staters planning on making the move down to Dallas and locking in an apartment? If anyone knows about any more reasonably priced apartments within biking distance, please let us know.
Thanks!

Re: SMU Class of 2015
I moved from CA, but I had an apartment lined up by July 5. By the time I moved the cheapest units in the Village were will over $800, so I wouldn't count on anything inexpensive being available then. You will probably be able to find an inexpensive unit, but not within biking distance. Check out Cambridge Court (or something like that) on Northwest Highway and 75. I think (after a student discount) their apartments were around $565 or $600 the first week of August. But you really couldn't bike from there.oldschool wrote:The relocation center agent at the Village Apartments said that come August, the least expensive efficiency apartments there will be over $700/mo. and the 1bd apartments will be over $800/mo., if there are any available at all. Apartments directly around campus (the only places I would want to bike from, considering crazy Dallas drivers and hot Dallas summers) are probably going to be over $750 in any case, and I don't know how many will be left that close to move-in. If at all possible, I would definitely check with a locator service and see if they can find some places for you now. Most landlords will hold for at least two weeks, and there's a 60-day move out notice, so any vacancies for the beginning of August will already be known.

Has anyone received his/her financial aid award package yet? FA Pony Tracks said these would start coming out June 1, but my financial aid information still has not updated.

Haha, fair enough. I saw the previous comments regarding the slow financial aid process, but those pre-date the June 1 message on Pony Tracks, so I hoped this year would be different...guess I was wrong. Thanks anyway.

The slings and arrows of outrageous indignities inflicted by the SMU Financial Aid department shall be borne by all law students, until the students rise as one and shout "ENOUGH!" Stan Eddy shall forever be thine tormentor until you seize his power from him by force, wielding pitchforks and torches and storming the Bastille of Indifference known as SMU Financial Aid.aaramil wrote:Haha, fair enough. Re: SMU Class of 2015
pretty sure last year the thing that was supposed to come out on June 1 came out late June, and it was really just a "You were awarded FinAid, click to accept" but it didn't actually have any real info or significance. I'm pretty sure we discussed it in last year's thread.aaramil wrote:Haha, fair enough. Re: SMU Class of 2015
I'm currently looking to hire an assistant to help me manage my real estate business when I start the Evening Program this August. The position will pay between $12-$15/hour, depending on experience. Ideally this person would be able to assist me year-round.
I will need help primarily after 6pm (when I'm in class) and on weekends. Duties may include:
- Installing and removing signs
- Ordering graphics and postcards
- Inputting listings into the MLS
- Scheduling showings for buyers
- Meeting inspectors and appraisers to let them into properties
If you're interested, please email me: jeff(at)duffeyhomes(dot)com.
Sorry to hijack this thread for personal reasons...but I'm hoping law students will be more intelligent than my friends.
