Anyone know anything about going to Rutgers and commuting from NYC? It says on the TLS review that students do it. I was wondering where in the city is it easiest to commute from?

That seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass. You'd have to live somewhere along the PATH or the NJT which only goes in to NY Penn Station. The PATH would put you around World Trade Center Station but even if you were going to Brooklyn from there you have to walk down and catch the 2 or 3. There's other stops on the PATH, I've never been on it down there but I can't imagine it's affordable. I might be wrong and there might be a way I'm not thinking of, but Jersey City by the PATH seems a lot easier.jma020 wrote:Anyone know anything about going to Rutgers and commuting from NYC? Dam, I really wanted to live in the city and I thought that was going to be possible. But it looks like no one does it. I was hoping there was a practical way.

Also you won't get in state tuition by living in NYC. That and the lower COL on the other side of the Hudson, it does not make sense to commute from NYC.

jma, It would make more sense to live in NJ and get in-state tuition, or if you have a scholarship, cheaper rent and COL, and use the extra money to commute to NYC for outings, which is very easy via train. Also, to be perfectly honest, you won't enjoy much city life much when you are a 1L due to the exorbitant amount of reading and studying you should be doing.

Friday was cool. The kids and faculty try to terrorize you but don't drink the cool aid. Its just school. Your read stuff, you write stuff, you learn stuff. Making it more than what it is is stupid. I requested to join your facebook group.ix88 wrote:Since there is not one already, I've just created one: http://www.facebook.com/groups/283055898439129/Bratty_60 wrote:Who is down to start a FB Group?
I placed my seat deposit today!
Btw, to those who went to Admitted students day this past Friday, how was it?
I was not able to attend.
(edited argh for some reason when i type letter a, letter s, letter d, these forums turn it into ASD)
I'm a Queens kid myself. Newark seems nothing like home. But its doable. I'm looking for studios in NJ city. Something reasonably affordable. I'm on my own in Flushing, and its too peaceful to want to have roommates again.

Some discussion questions:
I'm a New Yorker (school in the Bx, been in the city all the time, live a bit north of it). So I'm comfortable in the big city. However, I won't be having a car for 1L, maybe not at all (definitely not for 1L). So, some housing questions for any NJ natives or those of you with more knowledge:
Regarding University Square (basically on campus), is the double room academic year contract eligible for in state tuition? (I'm assuming not, since it's only academic year). Otherwise, the single calendar year (assuming in state definite for this lease) is basically 12k. University Centre for the 3/2 bedroom monthly is also gonna come out to 12k (I read elsewhere here that this doesn't include electric? Ouch).
Basically, I'm looking for something within walking distance due to the area and late nights on campus without a car. I mean for the same price and closer, I may just go University Square. Anyone with any tips? Walking distance, late night security, affordable, with ability to show a 12 month lease to get in state tuition. I guess also discussing roommates. Thanks for the help.
I also got the 2k work study on my initial letter. Not sure if I want to take it or not. It's only 2k and that'd be for tuition, right? I mean, if I have to work, I'd rather use the money for groceries or something. Plus, 1L at law school, I'd also rather use that time for studying and making sure I'm adjusting. Been awhile since I've lived in a dorm lol, commuted my last 2 yrs of undergrad.
I'm also down for any study groups and such. Talk to you all here soon.
I'm a Queens kid myself. Newark seems nothing like home. But its doable. I'd check out studios around University Heights. You'll probably get the same cost and far more privacy.
I got the 2k work study too. The pay is bad I think, it only comes out to like 10 an hour I hear. If your a Professional used to making double that, it could be better to just take out an extra 2k of loans. What's 2k when your taking out 75k plus anyway.
Any year lease should do it. Even if you leave the City for New Jersey in June or July. They'll forward you in state tuition.

Question. I was debating where to put in seat deposit Rutgers Newark, or Camden.
Basically 6,000 merit at Newark and 12,000 offer at Camden. Think i made right choice w all those mergers talks and stuff?

Hello! I'm a graduate of Rutgers Newark Law (class of 2011). Anyway, I'm moving out of my apartment, which is only two blocks from the law school, and two blocks from the Newark Broad Street Station. It's a third floor walk up, two bedroom, central heat and air, sky light. It'll be available May 1. Apartments are hard to come by in Newark, so if you're interested, you should contact my land lord, Jim. his email is highcaliber714@aol.com. He wants $1300/mo for it. Good luck next year! Sign up for barbri early and the E&Es are your best friend!

I think the merger is doubtful. Part of the School's appeal is its accessibility to Home. (New York). If they move it out of Newark, it could lose some of that.stevepark309 wrote:mm..been accepted for awhile but decided to put in seat deposit for here. WL to Fordham. Cardozo.

We'll see. If I had to pick, I'd go w/ RU-Newark. If you want to be here, that's the right pick. If you want Philly, maybe Camden would be better.

Does anyone know anything about the gym facility situation near the law school? I don't feel like paying $77 a month to the Newport extortionists

I looked at pictures of R-N's rec center online. Unimpressive. I like to run on tracks, there isnt one. There are a small number of treadmills though. There's a YMCA nearby as well, but its $40 a month.

Nothing. But then again I have no idea how the email system works. I think I forwarded everything to Gmail, but I still find Rutgers's email system confusing.
