Today was "Match Day" for med students...

Post by LawBrah » Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:26 pm

Today 4th year medical students found out where they will train for residency and what type of doctor they'll become. All of my med school friends won't stfu about it...it's literally all over my Facebook feed.... but I guess I can't blame them since it is a pretty big deal.

So why the hell doesn't Law have something like this? (no, OCI does not count).

Because the legal field =/= medical field?

So you'd rather have someone match you up with a field rather than choose yourself?

Because we're intellectually superior. While the forefathers of doctors were putting leeches on George Washington's a$$, the forefathers of lawyers were busy writing the Constitution. 8)

If it guaranteed me a good job, yes.

It's more of a camaraderie thing. No one in your class knows where they're going to spend the next 3-7 years of their lives and you all find out together at the same time. That really builds a bond IMO. The Match system also seems very efficient and takes the stress out of considering multiple job offers on multiple deadlines while waiting for more attractive job offers to come in.

I'd rather be able to pick what I want to do rather than have someone pick it for me. Although I can see how that would be exciting.

Isn't match day essentially a lottery?

Also, it is entirely possible to go unmatched.

It depends... Generally when someone goes unmatched they had chosen a specific field/hospital list they didn't have the grades/credentials for. They then have a week or something to try and line up a less desirable specific field. I believe they get a heads up warning in advance they are not matched and then have time to try and match. Yeah, it sucks for them but I've never personally heard of a US trained MD not getting something.

However, sometimes (I've only read stories for foreign MDs) they can go entirely unmatched for years and end up trying to do other things before being matched.

I'm surprised the legal field has never considered it.

The problem with the legal field is that there are far too many graduates each year to do this.

It's regrettable.

Scramble for primary care. Seems pretty miserable after spending 4 years and racking up $300k debt to become a surgeon or sub-specialist to be locked into primary care for years, but that's how it works AFAIK.

Not a lottery at all. You apply to programs and rank the ones that offer you interviews. The schools in turn rank their interviewees. Then they put all the rankings into a computer and make it applicant driven so they place you at your top choice program but if that program likes other candidates who also like them you could get bumped down to your second choice, rinse and repeat until you match somewhere on your list where no one can bump you off......it's actually pretty elegant and efficient IMO....like an LSAT logic games question - --LinkRemoved--

Yeah it's possible to go unmatched but if you go to a US school it's very slim (like 5%). It's like 50% if you go to the Caribbean or something though.

Would love for Biglaw firms to do this....

Meh. Resident pay is low and the experience is quasi still part of Med School.

because the legal field is less protectionist than med school, and because med school is a better predictor of competence for medicine than law school is for lawyering

When exactly did med overtake law? I know in the 50's and 60's they were considered "sister professions"....and while law still has some lay prestige like med the job security and $$$ just isn't there overall. Can the ABA do anything to counteract this?

Dearest Law Braaah,

You see, the ABA is already doing everything it can to enhance the viability of our profession by ensuring the proliferation of as many quality law schools as possible. Once every state in the nation has at least 15 law schools we should begin to reclaim our prestige! Only once fully 50% of Americans have spent $150,000 on JD programs that spend three years teaching abstract critical-basket-weaving theories about law will we be again considered a worthwhile profession.

Yours, etc.

I still think law is on par with medicine.

However, our decline started with the post 60s defunding of public interest positions. Up to that point, lawyers could earn a similar salary in public interest or government that they could in pvt pract. and many of these jobs were available. Combined with the explosion of tuition prices and over saturation of the market for pvt attys in the past 20 yrs, we now have an undeserved public sector and too many attys vying for the same jobs.

It's actually still possible to scramble for specialty spots, but there are far fewer of those (my ex's year, I think there were only, like, 5 unfilled orthopedic surgery spots in the country). Some take a year off to do research and reapply. You're also not necessarily stuck in primary care, either, if you scramble into that. For 3 years, maybe, but then you can still do a fellowship after that. Transfers in residency are also possible (though fairly rare).

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
