I mean, good for you and all, but if you're doing 70 hrs/week of work for law school you either have no life or are wildly inefficient at work.

First semester I overworked myself at probably 50-60 hours per week. This semester maybe 30 lol.

Managed 1L market SA and wish I worked way less last semester. I think it's something many people do, though... it's hard not to do too much when you're trying to figure things out.

Or 3) sacrificing less than a year of your life to try and increase the odds of employment outcomes.

A much more chill attitude makes sense after 2L OCI, since things are typically decided one way or another at that point anyway, but I don't see what's wrong with potentially overstudying as a 1L (as long as you can keep it up).

following up. for those who are planning to app for clerkship after graduating is the "best" resume 1L clerkship 2L SA ? Just confused because people seem to mention 1L SA often on TLS but then I know the value of clerking for a year or two after graduating as well (arguably that's better than going right into big law..)

So 1Ls are judicial externs, not clerks, and it's a pretty common thing for 1Ls to do with their summer. As far as actual Article III clerkships, they are more competitive and harder to land than big law for sure.

There's no real magic resume lines, but it's probably nice to have an externship, either 1L summer or during 2L or 3L with a judge since it gives you a better understanding of what clerks actually do.

to straighten up a few things..

1) 1L SAs are nigh impossible to get because there's so few of them (especially so if you're not a minority, woman, gay, etc) and really can't be planned on.
2) if you want a clerkship after graduating, this works really well in conjunction with pursuing firm work (especially litigation) and so a 2L SA is what you want, which hopefully leads to gainful employment post graduation, which you could push off for the clerkship and then pick up a handsome bonus and some seniority with.

judicial internships for your 1L year are fine, because basically you just want legal experience. to get a fed CoA one is rare though and depends on a bit of luck and usually a nice resume (this can help you jump past most other applicants). the dude i know simply applied straight to the judge instead of going through a school connect like was advised and due to his resume got an interview which he killed and received an offer.

I doubt that working that hard during the semester has an appreciable affect on grades. So while they may be "trying," it's a waste more than anything. That said, I am sure there are a rare few who actually benefit from going full retard on the amount of hours one puts in during the semester.
