do 1L judicial internships have to be full time?

Postby imisscollege » Tue Mar 01, 2011 3:23 pm

I have an interview with a judge on Thursday and my school puts funding judicial internships at the bottom of the totem poll in terms of who gets funding so I think my chances are not great. If I could just do it 3 days a week it'd obviously be way more feasible to get a part time job. is this even an option? my career person didn't seem to know. thanks.

Was talking about this with someone in my section yesterday. On the one hand its not like your resume will say "part-time". On the other hand if they ask you won't really lie and there is also a good chance they will call as a reference in which case the judge will tell them. I would play it safe and just do full time to get the maximum experience if at all possible. At least thats what I am currently doing if I end up getting the offer from the judge I interviewed with recently.

I actually didn't really mean for future reference/resume-type purposes. I meant more like is this something that the judge would be down to do, or do they tend to require and expect that their interns are full time no questions asked?

I know a lot of people who do split summers and part time with a judge. This is a question asked when they ask you "Do you have any questions?" during the interview.

You really think a judge would randomly tell the caller that you only worked pt?

Likely not, but if they ask how much time you spent there or how many hours you work there it may come out. I feel like if this didn't happen and didn't matter the majority of people would take part-time judges over full-time judges and relax in the summer if there was 100% no difference.

I am working for a judge 3 days per week this summer. I just told him that it was essential that I earned at least some money this summer, and he said fine. in return, I agreed to stay a couple weeks longer than he usually has interns stay and help him prepare for his fall docket. I guess it depends on the judge. I doubt he will go out of his way to say you (or I) only worked part-time unless he really doesn't like you.
