Re: 1L grade waiting thread
Got my grades today. I have some work to do next semester. I did well in the courses that I enjoyed and felt good about knowing, and not quite as well in the other courses.
Thanks to everyone for getting me through this wait. Also, congrats to TTH on those stellar grades.

Any HLS folks have any idea what the grade cutoffs are for top 10%, 25%, 50%, etc.?

i think 4/5 H's is around top 10, 3/5 H's is around top 25-30, 2/5 H's is median or slightly above. this is all very opaque though.

This seems about right although for GPA purposes whether or not you got an H in LRW matters.smittytron3k wrote:i think 4/5 H's is around top 10, 3/5 H's is around top 25-30, 2/5 H's is median or slightly above. this is all very opaque though.
Whether firms care at all about which H's you got is another story.

Definitely opaque. Rank and GPA don't actually show up on our transcripts, right?smittytron3k wrote:i think 4/5 H's is around top 10, 3/5 H's is around top 25-30, 2/5 H's is median or slightly above. this is all very opaque though.

Is DS another full step above H? i.e do a DS and a P average out to an H?

Same. It was my worst grade for doctrinal classes. Not bad per se (above median for the class), but not as well as I'd hoped. I realized later that I missed 2 colossal issues.TTH wrote:

Torts will be the class that drops my GPA from "great" to.... "oh shit, you're kinda stupid!"

Torts is usually the easiest class for law students. Curves for torts exams are correspondingly narrow and the exams are just typing contests. Really, predicting how well you did in torts is more akin to throwing darts with a blindfold on.

Torts is the class where when its time to start you just type absolutely everything that comes to mind. Literally. I typed 5k in 2 hours and it worked out well.

Definitely was not the case for me. My Torts professor was the only one I had who regularly gave out C+ and C grades. I am also not the fastest typist in the world (1500 an hour) and did just fine.A&O wrote:Torts is usually the easiest class for law students. Ours was short answer. And the questions were really convoluted! I am expecting a C

I think so, but it's an open question as to whether employers actually bother to do this kind of calculation when screening applicants.nattybro wrote:Is DS another full step above H? i.e do a DS and a P average out to an H?

I'm just conveying the general opinion I've heard among law students and my own experience. For one torts exam, the spread between a B and an A was 8 points. Pretty tough.soullesswonder wrote:Definitely was not the case for me. My Torts professor was the only one I had who regularly gave out C+ and C grades. Biglaw is tough for 2L summer if he/she repeats fall performance in the spring. But a Midlaw firm shouldn't be a problem. And if interest is public interest work, then these grades are no problem at all (don't forget about the loan repayment program...)Helmholtz wrote:errrrr.......IdontthinksoBarbellDreams wrote:You go to HYS, you really cant ever be screwed, even bottom 10%.

Wow, you would think you didn't just have some drama on here about making generalization about people at your school.Sogui wrote:If I had to guess the biggest factor I'd say interview skills. From what I hear, most firms who recruit heavily at a given school have a good idea of whether they want you before you step into the room. They tend to take people above a certain GPA and leave others, but will also interview people within a margin just to see what they've got. What you say during an interview is what can change that, from the interview comments provided by ours career services, and the recruiters who've spoken on campus... a lot of "sure things" became more tenuous post-interview while other tenuous candidates locked themselves in with a great interview.plum wrote:sorry to hijack: but what would you say generally the factors that might account for those who win the crap shoot in the middle? good looks? interviewing skillz? work experience? undergrad? 1L summer? course options? ties to the city? or is it just truly random...Desert Fox wrote:50% is pretty fucking shitty compared to probably 80% plus in 2007. 50/50 shot of getting permafucked isn't a good deal at all. And damn near everyone at those schools are smart and hardworking.
And when it's 50% it doesn't mean the top 50%. That means top kids almost all get offers, but the middle third is a crap shoot. Someone with a 3.1 might get an offer, someone with a 3.4 might get nothing, and someone with a 3.3 might get V10.
Given how I've seen some people present themselves in law school, it doesn't surprise me that interviews can kill the chances for people who would otherwise have no problem finding work. I'm talking about being cocky/arrogant/acting entitled/etc...

This is basically what I mean. If you're at HYS, your grades matter...but not really. That LRAP program is insane if you wanna go the public interest route and midlaw is about as close to guaranteed as you can get.go4hls wrote:Biglaw is tough for 2L summer if he/she repeats fall performance in the spring. Re: 1L grade waiting thread
I wouldn't say "guaranteed"... I read the HLS OCI thread last year and there were unhappy people. Still, I think someone below median at HLS who is proactive and doesn't just rely on OCI should be okay for next summer even with not-great grades.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
