Useful rank information for UT students.

Postby Ken Kesey » Sun Apr 12, 2015 8:59 pm

Since UT leaves us in the dark with ranking until giving awards (summa, magna, coif, chancellors), I decided to find out the GPA cut-offs. Data is from 2014 apparently. You can change the date of the link to see other years.

Name of Award No. Awarded Selection Process
Chancellors 16 3.93 GPA required
Order of the Coif 10% Top 10% of graduating class
% of Class Receiving GPA Required # of Students
Order of the Coif: 10% 3.81 37
Summa cum laude: 1% 4.07 3
Magna cum laude: 4% 3.89 15
Cum laude: 30% 3.58 112
Other: Chancellors 3.93 16
Source: ... 06&yr=2014

So those estimated rank calculators lose accuracy around the tails of distribution from using my personal stats.
The estimated rank (using those calculators) for me is around 5% when it's actually closer to 1% based upon this data. Although there's a difference between graduation and 1L grades.

OP, thanks for that. And just for clarity, the cum laude numbers are cumulative; i.e. magna is top 5% (4% get magna, but 1% gets summa) and regular cum laude is top 35% (30% get regular, plus the 5% who get magna/summa). And, of course, we say them in English (probably because we would come up with a bad pronunciation of the latin). *
