Transferring Credits Earned Through Summer Externships

Postby sandwhich » Tue Feb 10, 2015 12:52 pm

My school allows you to earn credits for summer judicial internships. Of course, however, these credits must be paid for. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether these credits are transferable - although I'm reasonably certain they are not.

If I'm pretty set on transferring, should I not pay for these credits? It would be $3000-$5000 (roughly, it would be expensive) for 4-6 hours.

I'm thinking I wouldn't want to transfer them anyway, since most schools require X number of credits at that school to qualify for honors, which would mean a full schedule each remaining semester at the new school (and sometimes more, like at NYU which requires 75% to be earned at NYU).

So no?

Like everything, it depends.

(1) All schools will have a max number of hours that you can transfer and it's generally 31-32 (on the semester system). Unless your 1L is less than 29 hours, that would mean you lose at least some of your hours.

(2) Many schools will not give credit for pass/fail credits, especially if they have a minimum grade in order to get transfer credit (e.g. C or higher). Caveat: I did get credit for one of these after getting the professor at my old school to email the dean of students that I would have received a C or higher had the externship been offered for a grade. I did lose an hour of credit from the externship (see #1), which I was less upset about because my new school requires 1 less hour for graduation than my old school.

(3) Some schools explicitly do not grant credit for externships done at your previous school, which is fairly clear. Others have a general rule against granting credit for any work "beyond 1L year," meaning you'll have to investigate further.
