Should I transfer? T30 to NU?

Post by LB529 » Thu Jul 14, 2011 10:46 pm

Hi All,

I'm deciding whether to transfer to NU from t30 where I'm Top 20% and have 40% scholarship. I did not make LR (not even a secondary) but made it onto Moot Court. I'm from the Northeast and am open to working in any major city up there: NYC, Philly, D.C. or Boston. I would consider Chicago big law too, but prefer the Northeast.

I wasn't expecting to get in anywhere I applied as a transfer and already bid on firms coming to my current school's OCI--I have about 12 interviews total, 10 with V100 firms, mostly NYC offices.

I will be about 50k more in debt going to NU in the short-term, but much more in the long-term with interest, etc. Is it a roll of the dice either way and I should just save myself 50k and hope these interviews pan out?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Even top 20% at a T30 is not a shoe in for a big law job and 40% is not a ton of money. I would say transferring is your best bet. You would have another shot at writing on to LR, the OCI will have a broader set of opportunities, and you would have a better name on your resume if things didn't work out at OCI.

This is not even close: transfer. You were fortunate to get into NU.

With your grades, and no LR, you'd be very lucky to get a job at your current school. You'll have much better prospects -- short and long term -- from NU.
