Secondary Journal First Semester and 1L Summer

Postby heyguys » Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:07 am

Would being on a secondary journal your first semester of 1L do anything for you as regards summer employment? The time commitment isn't that huge (~12 hours), but then again the idea of 12 hours source citing in a topic that, while interesting to me, isn't something I'm very interested in, seems sort of silly.

So, will it have any substantive impact at all?

Probably no real benefit for 1L summer employment.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't still do it, though. The major benefit, IMO, comes from the long-term opportunities. Presumably, if you join the journal early, then you have a better shot at being on the board or the EIC. If you are at Yale (judging from your profile), you could still get interviews for clerkships with district judges regardless of journal membership. But if you want to work for a circuit judge, journal membership is a huge boost (and another boost if you are on the editorial board). Check with some of your 3L classmates to see what they think.
