First-Year Asking for an Advance

Post by JHP » Sat Apr 14, 2018 10:37 am

(1) How often do first-years ask for advances prior to starting?
(2) How do you go about asking for an advance and what questions should you be asking/what should you be concerned about when taking an advance?

For context, I'll be doing biglaw and am considering asking for an advance to help out with rent after the bar, credit card bills, some moving stuff (firm is comping most moving costs). We have a late start date so I want to make sure I have enough cash for living costs until I get my first paycheck.
