Don't people usually just exit the elevator in the reverse order of how they entered?

I was taught that you exit based on school rank. Y, then H/S, then C/C, then N, and so on and so forth.

If she was wearing a skirt, you're supposed to let her out first. If she was wearing pants, you're supposed to go out first. Let's hope she had a skirt on since she's supposed to anyway.

Not a big deal. People do notice these things though. Just the other day I had a conversation with a female colleague about men letting women exit elevators first (the issue was raised by her). It's a custom more commonly observed in the South than in other regions these days. I gather that it annoys some women, pleases others, and many don't care.

Re: Not letting female atty out of elevator first?
No one will care.
(I hate this stuff. I'm always trying to figure out if the men in the elevator are expecting me to get off first because if they are and I don't it's awkward, but if they're not and I barge to the front it's awkward too. I was going to say I didn't grow up where people did this in elevators, but mostly I didn't grow up using an elevator every day. But still no one will care/notice for an isolated incident on a callback when you're the guest anyway.)

In Texas people care about stuff like this.

In general I'd say always follow the lead of the interviewer. If she seems to like the door-holding stuff, then put effort into those gestures; if she doesn't seem to care, you don't need to care either. Same going for women with male interviewers/etc. (e.g., even if you hate when guys hold doors open, smile and thank an interviewer who does so; don't stand there trying to win a door-holding battle).
FWIW I think you'll find a lot more women who don't care about whether their interviewee held a door open or not/whether he waited for her to get out an elevator first, than women who will.

Was this at Davis Polk? Having summered there I can say that it would definitely be noticed. I doubt it would affect whether or not you get an offer, but it seemed like an unspoken rule there to let women off the elevator first. And no, this is not a joke. Can't speak to other firms, but it wouldn't surprise me if, eg Simpson and Debevoise were the same.

This isn't correct. You also have to factor in perceived lay prestige in that offices particular market and vault ranking of the firm compared to the average vault ranking or your target firms.tyrant_flycatcher wrote:I was taught that you exit based on school rank. In any case, there is absolutely no point in worrying about this since you can't go back and change it now.

What sound does the elevator make when you get off? There's your answer.

Re: Not letting female atty out of elevator first?
Female interviewee and it was weird as hell to have both male and female interviewers insist on opening doors for me and having me walk through first even when it was awkward.
Weird. As. Hell.
At any rate, it might not matter. I live in a building where this is the unspoken rule, but if it doesn't happen I don't really care as long as the guy hustles so I don't have to wait for him a weirdly long time.

It makes sense, seeing how level headed you usually are

Well, I want you to know that I would let you off the elevator first, not just because you're a woman, but because you are a mod as well.

It's ok to not let the female atty off first so long as you're on full scholly and are natty.
