What the hell is going on
Go to T14, zero callbacks from OCI which ended last week.
MM'd probably 80 firms. Not a single hit.
Is it still too early in the recruitment process for firms to be considering MM applicants? Or am I seriously just getting nothing, and not meant to ever get an SA?

Re: What the hell is going on
Grades? What range t14? And mm'ing won't result in immediate callbacks. Unless you get a rejection, the firms will hold off until they know their class needs. Hang in there and keep mailing.

Re: What the hell is going on
Sorry to hear about this.
One thing you can do at this point is reach out to anybody you may know who works at these law firms. If someone can forward your application to recruiting, or mention you to recruiting favorably, then that could get your application fast-tracked. Recruiters are receiving dozens of e-mails all of the time, and a referral helps them sift through the applications.
Another thing you can do is reach out to alumni from your school who work at these law firms, by the same reasoning above. Even if it's cold-mailing, that's okay.
Otherwise: It is still early in the process. I know people who had honors in my class at a CCN who struck out and didn't get a job until the spring. They are now set at big law firms. Don't give up hope. Good job for MM'ing 80 firms -- that's really impressive. Keep at it.

It's slow for all of us this year. I'm at H, same story.

Are there fewer SA positions in general this year, or are firms simply moving slow? I'm at a T14 with median-ish grades and I struck out at OCI.Anonymous User wrote:It's slow for all of us this year. I'm at H, same story.

Re: What the hell is going on
I posted this in another thread but it works here too.
I think at least for DC the callbacks have been to a smaller group of people (at PVD) because of the volume of pre-oci offers. There has never been a year where so many firms have put out so many offers before oci. The career people at my school also agree. There are just less offers open right now than in any other year.

I had a few pre-oci callbacks in secondary markets, but I haven't heard anything back yet. Is it normal for firms with small classes to wait until after they complete oci/callbacks before making any offers?

Idk I probably spoke too soon cause there's another month and a half of solid recruiting left but from my observations the struggle is real at a bunch of schoolsAnonymous User wrote:Wait, how so? Re: What the hell is going on
In my experience with secondary markets they didn't move any slower than NY or DC. But I have heard it very much depends on which secondary market it is. I have heard some of the midwest cities, for example, move a bit slowerAnonymous User wrote:I had a few pre-oci callbacks in secondary markets, but I haven't heard anything back yet. Not good. That is really strange to me, since it seemed like firms had rebounded as much as possible from the recession. Maybe 180 has made a difference? Too soon to tell, maybe, but it will be interesting to seejbagelboy wrote:Idk I probably spoke too soon cause there's another month and a half of solid recruiting left but from my observations the struggle is real at a bunch of schoolsAnonymous User wrote:Wait, how so? Seconding. I've got a bunch of friends all throughout the T14 and it's pretty feast-or-famine, it sounds like.jbagelboy wrote:Idk I probably spoke too soon cause there's another month and a half of solid recruiting left but from my observations the struggle is real at a bunch of schoolsAnonymous User wrote:Wait, how so? At UVA/Duke. It's a mess. Half the class doesn't have more than 1 callback right now. Top 10% has way less options than previous years. For example, a decent NY firm that gave out 30+ offers to last year's class has called back 5 people in totality.

+1. all of my friends either have 8+ CBs or none. It's kind of ridiculous.Vursz wrote:Seconding. Re: What the hell is going on
Pre oci offers are doing a number on OCI. Networked with a few partners in my target area (CA) over the summer. They said they would love to invite me for an interview with their firm but they were already full for 2017 (this was in july). Had a firm with an upcoming CB just call be today to tell me my target practice area (corporate) filled up the earliest ever and asked if I still wanted to come in for litigation (i don't)...its tough out here.

Re: What the hell is going on
All of legal hiring seems to have collapsed into this bizarre arms race, what with judges hiring for clerkships multiple years out (including before second-semester 1L grades) and now a surfeit of pre-OCI offers that are wrecking OCI. I can't imagine how this is sustainable into the future absent some sort of NALP pact or the intervention of some school consortium.

Re: What the hell is going on
Pre-oci killed the DC market this year. Two v20 firms filled up their classes before the end of July. A bunch more were very full before oci started. I had cbs with two v60 firms that you wouldn't think do pre oci a month before oci. It's crazy.

Re: What the hell is going on
Anyone from CA schools chime in? Pre OCI offers have done a number in CA it seems. The firm classes sizes are already extremely small, for example SF based firms like Orrick only took 12 kids in 2016. I can't imagine it looking good out west.

Re: What the hell is going on
I get that pre-OCI offers are up, but what happens when people start accepting and declining those early offers? That firms are extending offers to top talent pre-OCI should not affect the overall hiring numbers in and of itself.
But yeah, at my non-HYS T-14 school it seems very bi-modal. Some people are absolutely cleaning up and a lot have zero callbacks.

Re: What the hell is going on
It may be possible that CB's are delayed this year due to so many pre-OCI offers. I can only hope that later rounds will go out once people start declining those offers. Even as a CCN student with a strong IP background, the struggle is real.
