How much are you paying to your student loans?

Post by 09042014 » Sat May 17, 2014 3:40 pm

Don't post if your parents are giving you money or significant assistance. Don't post if your wife is subsidizing you, or for any reason why you are atypical. DOn't post if you got free housing, etc. etc.

This question is how much you pay on average, so don't tell me you paid off 5k the month you got your fat refund when you only pay 2k normally.

I am a federal law clerk earning about 65K this year (not counting clerkship bonus that comes at the end of the clerkship).

I pay 2100 a month to loans. I plan to pay about 3500 when I move to Biglaw.

My loan payments will be about $3200. I'm clerking this year, so I'm going to have to see about deferring at least part of the balance. I think that is roughly what my after-tax take-home will be.

Every month I put between $4,000 and $5,000 after-tax dollars into loan payments and savings (I contribute some to a 401(k) so the math gets weird, because $100 going in pre-tax retirement savings could only be like $60 to $70 going towards loans). Live with a roommate but otherwise no income from family, etc.

NYC biglaw; young/single/comically frugal.

SSC clerk--$48,000

Monthly Payments--$1,200

For the people who are paying 3-4k, are you paying that much because you can or is that just what your payments actually are?

big law. market salary.

$680/mo. required.
Currently need some cash in savings before I start getting aggressive on loans. I hope to pay off in 3yrs by putting closer to 2.5k/mo into it. Already paid off my bar study loan. Will mean living fairly modestly for a while, but I'm cool with that.

Texas biglaw

Refinanced through Dr Bank
~170K total debt
minimum payment is like $1500, but putting $2800/mo towards loans

COL in Texas is higher than people expect. also, helping fund parents' imminent retirement, so can't put too much toward debt
