How many 2Ls at a t10 are still jobless?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:15 pm

At a t10, there seems to be a good number of people who are still looking. Any thoughts?

Not surprising. At a T10 or even T6, bottom third are not going to find getting a job easy. But corporate intern hiring is only just starting, and a lot of struggling people will do that for their 2L summer. (It's not for permanent employment, but it's better than nothing.)

2L at a T10 here, still looking for a job. At a DCNG school, although I've had the opposite experience, it feels like boom times here with everyone getting biglaw, although I guess if there are a fair amount of others still looking, they just avoid the topic of jobs like I do unless they're with their close friends

1L here attending MVP and we have 3Ls still unemployed. It is concerning since I do not know if the problem is a worsening job market or if they are unemployed because their grades are sub-par (whatever sub-par means ITE). Even at an MVP, the question for many around here is, will median open doors?

You got to be kidding me. Is 50% of the class unemployed? If not then of course median opens doors.

I always feel like whenever I see these threads, the people that went k-JD AND also have "subpar" grades (whatever that means) are the ones most likely in this position. Maybe that's just because I'm trying to convince myself that my WE is super important. Someone smack me if I'm wrong.

@ T7-T10, i know a student at median who got V20 coming from the right market, and I know someone who was ranked under the bottom 10% who got V150-V200 (not quite sure how). That being said, i would say about 20-25% of the 2Ls I talk to don't have anything lined up yet.. (private or public, paying or free).

I guess what I'm asking is, of the 20-25% that don't have anything, how many of them have good WE?

I will bet the percentage is higher outside the T14. More like 50%.

Any point to offering to work for free or small pay at small or mid sized firm? Sounds kind of desperate, but maybe I am!

T2 regional: from my conversations 50% of 3Ls lack jobs, 70% of 2Ls still looking for something this summer.

While he did say T2, I think the information is informative. I am at T2 as well and was wondering since it seems a lot of us T2s don't have anything lined up and very few interviews.

But wasnt this the expectation going to a TT? (that less than 50% would have something lined up/much less would get any kind of biglaw?)

I dont mean this to be disrespectful. I have a friend starting at St. Mary's this year, and she thinks jobs will be plentiful (I know St. Mary is a TTTTTTT)

Your friend is dreaming unless she is thinking of working for free for a legal assistance organization. While there are a lot of stories flying around, it seems the 2L students at the lower ranked schools are having incredible difficulties landing a paying gig this year. I have loads of friends with good rankings SOL so far.

WE can be invaluable if it's substantive, and was so in my case. If you're talking about one year as a paralegal, not so much. The people w/o any experience definitely underperformed at OCI at my T14 school, so I think you're right about that observation.

Good to know. Not paralegal work, actually slightly more "interesting". Feel free to PM if curious.

OP here: if i had to guess, it seems like at my t10, about 25% or so are still looking and i know for a fact that a good number (have no idea %-wise) of 3Ls are still looking as well. All this seems to track pretty close what the posters above have been saying.

Absolutely. MANY more postings for attorneys with 1-5 years experience than for entry level. No one wants to train entry level attorneys while paying them more than they bring in, not having a summer to train them while they are still students and dealing with clients who refuse to pay billing for entry level associate work.

Things seems back to pre-disaster times at CLS.

People that wanted big law that didn't get it seem to be bottom of the barrel, or made serious mistakes in bidding.

Can you break the range down more than T10? I'm at M and anecdotally I can only think of one person without a job. Even those that wanted secondary markets seem to have found them.

At HLS, and I know nobody who did EIP and struck out. I do know a couple of people who didn't have an offer in hand before fall semester started, but those people have since found biglaw jobs or market-paying equivalents.

so is it the case that the hiring for t10s, at least, is back to the pre-recession level?
