Final OCI results: 2011 Version

Post by Helmholtz » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:39 pm

This will be a thread for those of us who have completed OCI (i.e. an offer in hand and accepting that offer or people who have completely struck out thus far).

School*:
Market(s):
Approximate class rank:
Law review:
Work experience:
IP background:
Anything else that might have an impact? (diversity, etc. or whatever, really):
Screening Interviews:
Mass mails:
Callbacks received:
Callbacks accepted:
Offers w/vault ranges:
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?
Thank-you notes sent:

*an actual school name would be best—you are anonymous after all, and it would be the most helpful—but at the very least, try to give a range of a few schools (e.g. "MVP" or "CCN")

Can we add race and gender into this? Its more than a little misleading for a white male to see the stats of a pretty black female.

Law School: Virginia

Market(s): 3 or 4 different ones ---- Home smaller market (Phx, only mass-mailings, not OCI), Orange County/Los Angeles, NYC
Approximate class rank: Top Quarter
Law review: Nope
Work experience: Interesting/unique stuff during college that lead to great conversation during interviews and I could spin it for being prepared for BigLaw. This really helped my interviews.

IP background: No

Anything else that might have an impact?: I'm a pretty quiet person, but I practiced interview answers over and over and over again and did plenty of mock interviews. I think this process actually turned me into a likable or somewhat social person. I mass-mailed during summer to my home market and in LA/OC where I was spending the summer (this ended up being fruitful and giving me a few screenings & callbacks before OCI). I also had an offer in my pocket pre-OCI that I told most firms about during OCI, so maybe that made me more attractive and made them want to act quicker. Also see above about work experience. Also, I turned my alternates into callbacks and offers, so don't stress out if you are an alternate during OCI.

Screening Interviews: 16 (6 through mass-mail, 10 at OCI. Had about 17 screenings scheduled for OCI but I had an offer before OCI. So I dropped some screenings that they could trickle down to other people. Hurricane also screwed up plans and prevented me from interviewing with some V10 firms).
Mass mails: Yes, probably about 25 between Cali & AZ. Turned into 6 screenings.
Callbacks received: 12 (4 NYC, 5 Cali, 3 AZ)
Callbacks accepted: 9
Offers w/vault ranges: 4 within the V15, also top firm in home market. Once I accepted my offer, I told all the other firms that hadn't gotten back to me that I accepted another offer.

Shouldn't we also encourage those who struck out to post so that the results are less upwardly biased?

I'm going to break the chain of anonymous replies, mostly because my OCI season was a tale of two cities and I was afraid it might not be credible anonymous.

School: HLS
Markets: NY, DC
Approx. Class Rank: Top 20%-ish?
LR: Negative.
WE: Straight from undergrad, although I worked full time through most of college and held 2 jobs most summers.
IP Background: Non-IP technical background.
Anything else that might have an impact? I grew up in NYC. I found out the hard way that this is, unfortunately, a huge strike against you if you plan on practicing in another market (even one where you have significant ties) that is not NY, and this doesn't even really help you in NY.
Screening Interviews: 29 (17 NYC, 12 DC)
Mass Mails: 0
Callbacks: 14 (14 NYC, 0 DC. I had great reasons for wanting to practice in DC and a pretty good idea of what my practice would look like based off of significant work in undergrad. This seemed not to be enough for most interviewers.
Callbacks Accepted: 7
Offers: 7 (2 V5, 1 V10, 3 V20, 1 V100). Yes, I stayed in compliance with NALP guidelines.

It's hard to say exactly what was responsible for my lack of success in DC, but it seems unlikely that I just sucked as an interviewee because of the contrast in NY, even with the highly selective firms. You can strike out in DC from anywhere in any class, so I highly recommend bidding smartly.

Approximate class rank: top 20%
Law review: Yes
Work experience: N/A.

Anything else that might have an impact?: Did detailed research about each firm and had a very targeted strategy for every screening interview. Have been told I interview well.
Screening Interviews: 20 (3 V5, 8 V6-15, 9 V16-50).
Mass mails: N/A.
Callbacks received: 14 (3 V5, 7 V6-15, 4 V16-50).

I am very close to striking out, so I may as well temper the enthusiasm here a little.
School: T20-25
Market(s): All secondary, no apps to NY/DC/Chi/LA
Approximate class rank: top 5%
Law review: Secondary
Work experience: N/A
IP background: N/A
Anything else that might have an impact?: Have been told I'm a good interviewer; did a number of mock interviews through career services. On the downside, my cover letters were extremely bland. I hate writing them. I was a LS splitter, so my undergrad GPA isn't very good either.
Screening Interviews: 13 through OCI, 8 through mass mailing.
Mass mails: roughly 70, though I started later than most
Callbacks received: 16 (3 from OCI, 9 from mass mailing)
Callbacks accepted: 15 (11 dings, waiting on 4). Declined one because they wanted me to pay for my own flight and fly down on very short notice; I wasn't that into them.
Offers w/vault ranges: zero!
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: Still haven't heard from 3 OCI screeners, gotten a few mass mail rejections.

Ah, the difference between zero and one. Very seriously evaluating whether I should drop out or not.
