It is way, way, way premature to be making judgments like that. The differences between the top NYC firms are very slight, and the descriptions you find available online rarely line up squarely with the way things feel in person. You should never decide against interviewing with a firm because you don't think your personality would fit; that's precisely why you do the interviews.

My expectations of what firms I though I would and would not click with did not match the reality post-interview season very well at all. I was right about some, and completely wrong about others. And especially at firms as large as the ones you've mentioned, it's already something of a fool's errand to try and peg a personality on the entire business entity.

I agree. I think it's fine to go into OCI predisposed against certain firms because of what you've heard, but I would at least interview with them and judge for yourself. This is especially true given that unless you mess up royally, you will get multiple offers in your top 10, so all your NY bids from Paul Hastings on down are basically throwaways. Not to mention that several of the firms on your list (Boies, Quinn, Paul Weiss) have similar reps to Cravath, S&C and Skadden in the sense I think you are talking about.

I'd also add that while Wachtell is M&A focused, they have an incredible reputation in NY for lit as well. Among other things, Chambers ranks them Band 1 for lit, ahead of Boies, Cleary, Kirkland, Debevoise, Weil, GDC and Quinn (http://www.chambersandpartners.com/USA/ ... 9#org_4210). Not saying Wachtell is actually better than these firms for lit, just trying to counter the idea that you should only go to WLRK if you want to do M&A.

In the end it's your call, but I would replace some of your lower bids with the above firms, simply because you won't be relying on them at all, and who knows, one of these firms may surprise you.

SLS
Top 10%? (10Hs with 2 prizes, 3 Ps)

Want SV, strong ties to area. All firms are SV except for the few otherwise indicated (thinking about taking out WLRK and W&C, but not sure who to replace them with). Worried that I might be overshooting (especially considering the tiny class sizes in a lot of the SV firms) and would appreciate any advice about who to take off/add/move around. Tried to list firms with larger class sizes higher in list, but otherwise mostly according to how they were bid last year and personal preferences.

Michigan Top 25%ish, secondary journal. All firms are Chicago except two home market firms. Leaning towards litigation. I sort of trailed off at the end of the list. Any suggestions much appreciated.

HYS, around top 1/4, law review, interested in litigation, especially IP and appellate. Aiming for DC mostly, although could do SF (to which I have ties) and even NY so I've also included firms from those places on my list. List may be slightly aggressive but I also have a 1L SA from which I expect an offer, at a firm that's included in the list. Firms DC unless otherwise noted. Of the firms to which I'm applying/expressing interest in more than one office, are there any that are known not to like people doing that? Also any thoughts on splitting markets three ways like this? Thanks! Also, I ordered it taking into account both personal preference and the bid/interview ratio from last year.

2. Covington
3. WilmerHale
4. Boies (DC/NY/Oakland)
5. Arnold & Porter

Michigan, top 5-10%, secondary journal, want litigation in NYC (home town). Put a couple of Chicago bids in (working there this summer), but NYC is definitely the preference and I may just get rid of them. This list is really rough and I think I may be being too conservative by putting some firms that I'm way above the median GPA at the top (I hear these are harder to get interviews for so that's the rationale). It's also quite possible there are a couple of glaring omissions:

Weil
Fried Frank
Paul Weiss
White & Case
Debevoise
Kirkland (NYC)
S&C
Skadden
Jones Day
Cravath
Dewey & LeBeouf
Cleary
Kramer Levin
Jenner & Block (CHI)
Kirkland (CHI)
Gibson Dunn
Shearman
Cadwalader
Simpson Thacher
Latham
Allen & Overy
Davis Polk
Sidley (NYC)
Milbank Tweed
Linklaters
Dechert
clifford chance
Proskauer
Morrison & Foerster
Chadbourne & Parke

Except for the two Chicago firms these are all NY offices, though some are not primarily NY firms. Haven't double checked the sizes of some of the offices at the very bottom of the list so they may be too small and I'll have to replace them.

I'd be curious to see what people say about this, as I am in a similar position with somewhat similar intentions. My only initial reaction is that mayer should probably be higher and sullivan NY looks out of place given your other top bids.

9 Hs, 3 Ps, 1 book prize at SLS (one grade outstanding). Law review. Probably around top 10 percent. Want litigation in California (SF or LA) or DC. I'm worried I don't have enough safeties on this (alphabetized) list. Is that just me being stupidly risk averse? If so, which of these are clear safeties? And if not, what should I be adding?

Akin Gump (LA)
Arnold & Porter (DC, LA)
Bingham McCutchen (SF, LA)
Boies Schiller (Oakland, DC, NYC)

Are you kidding me? You don't need safeties, in my opinion, with those stats.

Similar stats (sans Law Review for me), and our lists look pretty darn similar. I'd add in Davis Polk Menlo Park, Paul Hastings SF, Simpson Thacher Palo Alto (17 offers last year on 23 screeners), Ropes and Cooley (though you'll have to bid Cooley quite high). You also can't bid multiple offices for MoFo and Boies, so you've got to pick one and go for it.

What if I'm at a CCN and am actually interested in 4-5 firms, but otherwise just want a job. How should I make my bidlist?

Emory/UGA transfer to CCN. Was #5 at old school with LR. 1L SA in a secondary market. Will hopefully have started note-on process at new school by the time OCI rolls around so I can mention it.

I also clearly have NO idea what I am doing, so any help is appreciated. I really want Chicago. Otherwise, I really want a job (the NY bidding)

1. Kirkland & Ellis (Chicago)
2. Sidley Austin (Chicago)
3. Jenner & Block (Chicago)
4. Skadden (Chicago)
5. Latham & Watkins (Chicago)
6. Mayer Brown (Chicago)
7. McDermott (Chicago)
8. Perkins Coie (Chicago)
9. Cravath (NY)
10. Winston & Strawn (Chicago)
11. Baker & McKenzie (Chicago)
12. Williams & Connolly (DC)
13. Katten (Chicago)
14. Schiff Hardin (Chicago)
15. Jones Day (Chicago)
16. Boies (NY, Litigation)
17. Quinn Emanuel (NY)
18. Freshfields (NY)
19. Davis Polk (NY)
20. SullCrom (NY)
21. Weil (NY)
22. Skadden (NY)
23. Cleary (NY)
24. Simpson Thacher (NY)
25. Paul Hastings (Chicago)
26. Greenberg Traurig (Chicago)
27. Bryan Cave (Chicago)
28. WilmerHale (NY)
29. Debevoise (NY)
30. Cadwalader (NY)
31. MoFo (NY)
32. OMM (DC)
33-50....wtf? I stopped differentiating between firms at like 11...

I don't know much about firm selectivity so I can't really help with your list. Just wanted to say if you've transferred to UChi, the topic access process is pretty tough. I think maybe only a couple of people get on through this every year, so I'd be hesitant to make a big deal about it in interviews.

Ah I wouldn't make a big deal about it, if they asked about lack of LR I'd just say something like I'm giving it a go, but we'll see.

Also, not a big deal because it's one of 30 bids, but FYI clifford chance's litigation group is basically nonexistent.

UChi, Top 5%, LR. Leaning transactional but ideally would like a gig where I can check out lit. as well. Want Bay Area, bidding Chi as a backup.

Here's where I'm at so far. Don't really know what I'm doing. 50 bids, straight lottery.

1. MoFo - SF (10)
2. Gibson Dunn - SF (8)
3. Simpson Thatcher - Palo Alto (21)
4. Skadden - Chi (84)
5. Sidley - Chi (60)
6. Paul Hastings - SF (6)
7. Boies - Oakland (19)
8. Jones Day - SF (21)
9. OMM - SF (21)
10. Kirkland - Chi (84)
11. Baker McKenzie - Chi (21)
12. Goodwin Procter - Silicon Valley (5)
13. Davis Polk Menlo Park (21)
14. Cooley - SF (19)
15. Wilson Sosini - Palo Alto (40)
16. Jenner - Chi (84)
17. Fenwick - SF (21)
18. Mayer Brown - Palo Alto (11
19. Pillsbury - SF (9)
20. Foley Lardner - SF (21)
21. Perkins Coie - Chi (21)
22. Latham - Chi (42)
23. Ropes Gray - SF (12)
24. Bryan Cave - SF (21)
25. White & Case - Palo Alto (21)
26. McDermott - Chi (63)
27. K&L Gates - Chi (21)
28. Winston Strawn - Chi (42)
29. Schiff Hardin - Chi (60)
30. Proskauer - Chi (21)

That's all I have so far. Obviously all big names, if anyone has great suggestions for decent smaller firms in either the Bay Area or Chi I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for the help.

27. K&L Gates - Chi (21)
28. Winston Strawn - Chi (42)

That's all I have so far. Obviously all big names, if anyone has great suggestions for decent smaller firms in either the Bay Area or Chi I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for the help.
Any idea on the relative bidding popularity of Chicago/NY/LA/DC? I'm a UChi transfer and so I think I am trying to set my list up so I get as many screeners as I can, since how firms are going to look at my actual credentials is kind of a wild card.

I know this is probably super obvious, but what are the numbers in parenthesis? I thought perhaps it represented class size, but that doesn't seem to match.

Ah sorry. Number of interview slots. We don't get info about bids per slot from last year though. :|

This is guesswork, I know there must be people on here who know more, but I think it is something like 35% Chicago, 25% NY, 15% DC, 15% Cali, 10% Other.

Gibson lets you spend the first two years at the firm "unaffiliated" doing both lit and corporate work as an associate. The office I'm summering in views it as a big selling point, so I would definitely mention it during interviews.

Background: Attending HLS, grades are 10Hs with two DS (I assume around top 5% or so), 5 years interesting work experience, non-URM, want to work in litigation, focused on NY and Boston markets, list is based both on my desire to work for the firm and how competitive bidding for the firm was on the last two OCIs.

1. Boies Schiller (NY)
2. Paul Weiss (NY)
3. Davis Polk (NY)
4. Ropes & Gray (Boston)
5. Debevoise (NY)

23. Cahill Gordon (NY)
24. Allen & Overy (NY)
25. Sidley Austin (NY)
26. Dewey & Leboeuf (NY)
27. Foley Hoag (Boston)
28. Mintz Levin (Boston)
Looks great, but out of curiosity, why no:

-Cravath
-Wachtell
-Susman Godfrey
I didn't think Cravath, SullCrom, or Skadden really fit my personality type (from what I am able to gather and I think there are a bunch of other great firms out there. While I know they all require a ton of hours, I just didn't get a pleasant vibe from those three. I didn't include Wachtell because their focus is on M&A, and I want to do litigation. I realize they have a litigation department, but I think I would rather go to a firm with a larger litigation practice for training opportunities and more exposure to various forms of litigation practice. As for Susman, I'm not on law review (though I'm on a supervising editor and member of the board for a secondary journal).
Don't forego Susman just because of no LR. I think neither NY SA last year was on law review, although I think they were HLAB members.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
