TX 1L Biglaw SA Interview Timetable

Post by DoubleChecks » Wed Dec 15, 2010 4:04 pm

Anyone who has applied to TX know the general timetable of when interview offers go out after 1L SA app submissions? Or rather, how long before I should assume I won't be getting an interview invite from x biglaw firm?

Thanks

I did a 1L SA interview at BB just before Christmas, but they told me I was one of the first to interview. Notification was only a week or so before If I remember correctly.

I sent out 50 applications (every NALP firm that accepted 1Ls in every market I had ties) on exactly Dec 1st. I had a few other firms give me a tease (one midlaw firm offered to interview me if I was coming to the area on my own, but they said they probably weren't hiring any 1Ls).

Ended up getting dinged after 1st semester grades came out. Unfortunately, my 1st semester grades were a lot worse than my 2nd semester grades.

quick question: you guys applied before getting grades? was this like an email with your resume asking if they're hiring or what?

thanks.

Nope, it was with a cover letter with a sentence saying that grades will be sent upon availability + a resume. I sent everything hardcopy to every firm.

I'm a 1L, and I plan to practice in Texas. BB contacted me last week for an interview. V&E and a few others said they're interested, but want to see some grades first before an interview.

really? VE only emailed me a 1L reception thing, but did not ask for my grades (or said they're interested but were waiting for grades), though i did get a BB interview as well. VE must not be interested in me :(

I interviewed with BB and VE during the first week of January. It will be interest to see how many 1L SA positions the firms have this year. Last year, a number of TX firms completely rid themselves of 1L SA's.

would asking before applying be the way to go, though? what if they require a letter of recommendation or something else (one asked for an undergrad transcript)?

It may depend on the city, because I didn't get invited to any receptions at V&E. I went back and looked and I have also heard from Locke Lord, with basically what V&E said, and an invite to a reception.

I haven't heard of this. I just sent my cover letter and resume to firms that were hiring 1Ls (or said they were considering hiring 1Ls). I didn't have to send transcripts or anything. Our CSO said just the resume and cover letter after Dec 1 was fine.

Sent letters out on Dec 3, got responses over the next week and a half and have four interview during the week of the 10th. I think this is more due to the fact that I go to school out of state than anything.

This is very premature, but does anyone know how 1L offers are done?

1L applying in dallas... i sent all my apps via email dec. 1; i heard back from a few almost immediately, and others in the past week and a half. i didn't have grades yet to include, so i wrote targeted cover letters.

Does anyone know anything about Haynes & Boone's summer Fast Track program? Is there any advantage to pursuing it even if you're almost certain to be on one of the coasts 2L summer?

What do you mean by 'any advantage'? It's a 1 week program at the end of the summer, so you should be able to finish any other summer work you're doing before it starts. Even if you're on one of the coasts, you could still travel to do it in August. It's only in the Dallas office, though. It has traditionally led to 100% offers to return for second summer. I'd say that's a huge advantage to have that leg up during 2L OCI.

I got an email from V&E Houston that my application is being reviewed and they will be in touch soon. Locke asked for grades and invited to a reception.

Personally, I would advise not pursuing it if you are "certain" that you are going to be on one of the two coasts for your second summer. First, it's only a one week program. Second, consider your fellow classmates and allow someone else to have this opportunity who really wants to work atHayBoo long-term. Third, it could create some further doubt in the minds of coastal firms (especially the west coast) if you don't already have any ties to the region. Finally, firms within a given city/state talk. It's a smaller world then you think. Typically, after 2L OCI, at least, firms will share with one another who will be joining them.

I would concur about the HayBoo Fast Track. Its not worth the risk of hurting 2L summer employment options just for 3K.

However, if you are considering Dallas, I would highly recommend it. HayBoo is the largest law firm in Dallas, the largest firm based in Dallas, the fifth largest Texas firm (behind the big 3 and Locke which doesn't really count), and has done really well over the past several years. If you want to be in Dallas, it should be at the top of your list.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
