1L Summer Job at a V100 firm in NYC - how long? how much?

Post by spinsta » Wed Feb 03, 2010 12:51 pm

Last week I posed the question of federal judicial externship or US Attorney's Office in NY for my 1L summer, since I was trying to decide between those two offers. Having decided in favor of the USAO, I suddenly received an offer from a V100 Biglaw firm here in NYC. However, the partner I spoke with on the phone did not mention compensation or length of the summer position. He said they will be sending me an official offer letter shortly. I am likely to accept the position because I need the money, but I am curious what people think the salary/length will be. How long do you think? 10 weeks? 12? How much will I get paid? Market $3,077/wk or less because I am a 1L?

Thanks, everyone!

curious....why did you choose USAO over Federal Judge? I'm making same decision and am leaning towards Judge.

I chose the USAO over the judge for more personal reasons (wanted to stay in NYC with significant other) - both are great options, you really can't go wrong. I think the USAO in NY is a bit more prestigious than a federal judicial externship, but the difference is nominal. Also, my school would give me public interest funding for the USAO but not the judge. Congrats on the great options!

Tagged. Still a 0L, but always have been curious about how much these jobs pay for 1Ls.

I am told that the market rate for all Biglaw summer associates is $3,077 a week for 10-12 weeks. I am also told that Biglaw firms do not normally distinguish between 1Ls and 2Ls - they get paid the same. Or at least I can hope, right?

Apparently. I think it depends on the judge - he didn't seem to mind.

Go to the firms website or find their NALP online. This will tell you all the details from at least last year like how many 1Ls and 2L summer associates they had, weekly pay, and tons of other information.

Thanks for the NALP tip, guys - it says $3,076/wk for 1Ls, but nothing about the length of the summer program... Any thoughts on that question?

Why not simply ASK?

You don't have to ask the partner. You can just ask the recruiting coordinator whose job it is to take care of these things. I am 100% sure he/she would know more than us.

I think its usually 10-12 weeks, depends on the firm. Just be patient and wait for the letter or if you're that impatient, contact the firm directly.

A part of me keeps thinking that they made a mistake and I am afraid that if I call and ask, they will realize and rescind the offer. Jk - I just don't want to be pesky when I could just patiently wait for the letter to arrive.

OP: if you don't mind my asking, how many resumes did you send out? I hear getting a 1L gig is extremely hard so I'm guessing you just blanketed the V100 with resumes?

How hard is it to get one of these jobs if you go to a school in the lower top 14? What class rank do you need?
