People who want nice stuff but have no money. Also, see: people who buy $30k cars on $50k salaries.
I work in bank collections, and 95% of the people whose debts I pursue either have zero financial sense or were willing to go broke to uphold some outward appearance of wealth.
I meant to comment on this sooner, but a $30k car on a $50k salary is very doable. I'd know, I've done it. $50k/yr is a gross of $4166/mo, and a 60-month loan on a $30k car (with good credit) is just over $500/mo, or about 12% of your gross income. If you live in a state with no income tax and low property prices, it can be downright reasonable.
Now, a $40k car on a $30k salary... I've seen people try to do that, and with bad credit. One lady with a newborn baby tried to buy a brand new Expedition Limited, kept insisting that was what she wanted and shed take nothing else. She could've actually been financed for a nicely equipped Explorer, definitely big enough for her and her one child, but she just had to have the bigger vehicle. Even in economic good times we had to tell her she couldn't afford that much. She told us she'd take her business to someone who "wanted to sell to her" and stormed out.
I'm willing to bet she found someone that would, too, in spite of her finances saying "hell no" to anyone that looked at them.
