Are people planning on buying books cheaper online? All of undergrad I was too lazy to do this, but I'm broke now; saving on books could be good.

So I got the ISBN codes from the book list for classes... does anyone know if the ISBN corresponds to a book's edition number too? Like, if someone is selling a used copy online and doesn't mention the edition, but the ISBN matches up, do I have to worry?

If you already know your section, just walk into the book store and find the books on the shelves.

Looks like you can find all the required books on the bookstore website. Generate a course list and the books will be listed. They have all the books lined up in store as well. Like Corsair said, just walk there.

I actually got my list off of facebook... people from the different sections have been posting them.

I always just went to the bookstore and got them off the books. They have all the 1L books shelved together with cards indicating your professor's name.

How has orientation gone so far? I haven't seen any large groups of people in the school, and last year they had all kinds of tables set up in the atrium.

I was thinking about renting from Chegg.com but I'm not sure if I will want to keep the books after I'm done with them. I kept a few of my undergrad books that were from my major and I enjoyed, but I'm not sure how much I'll want/need Basic Tort Law on my shelf after 1L.

I've kept a small # of my books from earlier classes. Most, you will never need again -- esp. given how frequently new editions come out and what's available online. I kept my Admin law book, since I'm going to pratice in a regulatory group, but I've sold back my 1L k's, crim, property, and torts books. Keeping civ pro might be a good idea if you plan on taking civ pro II, or if you do something lit-related your 1L or 2L summer. Otherwise, old books are just expensive and awesome bookshelf decorations.

What are we in law school for, if not to fill our bookshelves in impressive fashion?

So what are people wearing tomorrow? It says "business casual" because we'll be taking photos that potential employers will see. But I'm assuming these are headshots -- do nice jeans and a button down shirt (for a guy) sound okay to people?

2. About books, one great money saving strategy is to wait until the first couple days of school and buy them from the numerous students selling them at school/over the listserv. (Speaking of which, I have the two legal writing books and some E&E's I'm trying to get rid of ...)

Won't we have things that we have to have read for the first class though?

Yeah, but there are some work arounds - you can copy the first couple assignments out of someone's book, or read the cases online, and sometimes the profs will post the first readings on blackboard since some people buy their books online and won't have them yet.

I guess it's just a judgment call. On the one hand, you want to start off on the right foot. On the other hand, you could save some serious money.

How much exactly is "serious money"? After the 45k shelled out for just tuition, serious money has to be quite a bit to get my attention

So... maybe this is a dumb question, but what is everyone bringing with you to orientation? Do you think a paper notebook and something to write with is sufficient or will we need a laptop? I'm not sure exactly how in depth the Portal sessions will be and how many notes we'll want to take, but I'm assuming that if a laptop was necessary they would have told us so?

I was just pondering the same question, actually.

P.S. As for the waist-up business casual for our Facebook photos, will people be wearing it around all day or packing a different shirt for the other activities?

laptop is not necessary. A small pad might be nice if you're that kind of person, but you'll still probably be fine without it. Orientation isn't that "zOMG" dense.

Gus: If the weather isn't too warm, Just wear jeans and a decent shirt. To the world you look casual, in your head shot you'll look business casual.

Would it be bad to wear dark jeans, a dressy shirt, and nice shoes for the Monday events? I forgot to get my slacks dry-cleaned.

I feel silly being worked-up about this, but I am.
