Can anyone post a list of the largest legal markets

Postby Roadhouse » Thu May 07, 2009 2:04 am

I poked around on google and could not find one.

Found this on ATL in the comments section (take it for what it is worth):

Here are the top 10 legal markets:

1. New York City
2. Los Angeles GMA
3. Washington, D.C.
4. Chicago
5. Dallas
6. Philadelphia
7. San Francisco
8. Houston
9. Atlanta
10. Boston

hoping others had better info and perhaps a link...

Edit: here is the link to where I got that info:

Weird, I would have thought that Houston would be ahead of Dallas.

Yeah, me too...also, i am surprised that Philly is ahead of San Francisco. I wonder where Seattle would go.

That list is bogus.

It's a lot more like:

1. NYC
2. DC
3. Chicago
4. LA
5. Bay Area

then:

6. Houston
7. Dallas
8. Boston
9. Philadelphia
10. Atlanta

I don't think Seattle would be top 10. Seems like a smaller market than Boston, Philly, or Atlanta.

How is legal market actually being defined? Number of firms? Size of firms? Reputability of firms? It's easy to talk about legal markets in abstract terms, but I'm not sure what we're actually talking about specifically. I should probably learn, though.

My list is mostly going off # of elite (or big, at least) firms.

Also, let me just say that something posted as a comment on ATL is likely going to be of pretty dubious quality. The general attitude of ATL comment boards is about the same as xoxo.

Lessons from ATL comment board? Every school that's not YHSCC is a TTT, law firms outside of the primary markets don't exist, and u r a n00b.

That is exactly why I said take it for what it is worth...

Nobody has any further links or clarified definitions of legal markets?

On Depaul Law's homepage, they say Chicago is the 2nd largest legal market.
I definitely think Chicago is either 2nd or 3rd, right next to DC.

If you google "second largest legal market"
There are many websites (of law schools and 1 law firm) that claim Chicago as 2nd
One or two sites claiming DC
And one claiming the state of California

This isn't a list per se, but http://www.alreadybored.com has listings of firms in each market with salary information. I imagine it would give you a better idea of what market you wanted to go to rather than an arbitrary list.

What might be more significant are the markets that are contracting and the ones growing (if any).

NYC has contracted greatly in the last 8 months with Wall Street's demise, a very tough legal market there now. DC is doing better, though I know layoffs have occurred there as well, but with Fed gov't relatively stable the DC market seems more insulated. I've heard LA is pretty awful these days for legal job openings.

I found a link to a website that has a bunch of information on law firms, lawyers per capita, avg hours worked and avg pay. Although the information is sure to be dated a bit and perhaps off (especially in the hours worked fields, since we are seeing major contraction in the legal industry as of late)

anyways, just passing it along...

You think Chicago's legal market is bigger than LA's?

I'd venture that more AmLaw 100 firms have offices in LA than Chicago, but that a lot of those offices are smaller. Similarly, almost every AmLaw 100 firm has an office in DC (as well as NY), but many of those DC offices are small. Many types of work (corporate, bankruptcy, etc.) are significantly underrepresented in DC.
