Military Vet

Post by suaveworks » Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:36 pm

I am active duty military right now and have two years left on my contract. I'm currently looking at schools and trying to decide what would be the best major to have before law school, or does that even matter? Do law schools even look at the major or do they only care about your gpa and LSAT? And what is this about personal statements? And will being a vet of the military help me at all in any of this? Thanks!

- Military vet will be a strong soft and should really help your application
- Law schools don't care about major. Go with something that you enjoy that will allow you to get a high GPA. ("Pre-law" should generally be avoided, I think.)
- No need to worry about personal statements until you're getting ready to apply.

LS and MBAs are very similar in that being a military vet is about the most impressive relatively normal soft there is. Certain schools have fairly strong vet presence IIRC.

Generally speaking, you can expect to outperform your numbers provided no glaring issues. Your GPA and LSAT will still be the key determinants. Nothing else really matters. Study something you find interesting in so you can learn something and also excel.

Excluding well known, blow off classes at your school: I've found that the subjects that interest me are the ones I get the best grades in.

School matters, major doesn't seem to as much. A stem major can be used as a weak excuse for a slightly low GPA, but you are better off as a 4.0 Poli-sci than a 3.2 engineer. Some majors come off as very soft, right or wrong, criminal justice for instance. Do what interests you, and do well. Most importantly, undergrad will probably be much less expensive than law school. Save your GI Bill!!!
