Why do people love to hate GULC? Forum

Can we have a discussion about this? It is one of my top choices and I'm trying to understand why people are so negative about it.

They don't give much scholarship money & place worse than the rest of the T14 into bigflaw.

Basic idea: GULC is a good school, but they have a reputation for being stingy with scholarship money. FWIW, I go to GULC and I certainly wouldn't do it at anything close to sticker.

It doesn't deserve t14 status. Terrible biglaw placement and there isn't really a way to verify their government/PI numbers as all solid outcomes.

gulc has the lowest ft/lt/jd minus school funded rate in the entire t14
the lowest biglaw + fedclerk
excluding yale, the highest underemployment rate
the second lowest in terms of federal clerkships
the highest level in shitlaw (2-25 attorneys)
the second highest in school funded
the second lowest in % of class with aid

there are few valid reasons to go to gulc unless you're rich, on gi bill, or have a substantial discount
many people go to gulc because it is a t14
or the preftige of the georgetown name
those are shitty reasons
with gulc numbers you can target a strong regional that will likely give you more money and better placement in your area

Also given GULC's medians, if you're accepted at GULC it shouldn't be your only choice within the t14.

The large majority of people accepted at GULC should have better options, for the reasons stated above.

Basically it's overrated which has lead to a lot of backlash on here. It's pretty clearly #14 which isn't bad but it pays behind the rest of the lower T14.

Nope. It's on the level of a Texas or Vanderbilt.

Yeah you're right about that. It's definitely closer to Texas and Vandy than it is to other T14 schools. I think a lot of Georgetown people say it has to do with a lot of self-selection into PI but you gotta be weary of that. The main issue is that they continue to take massive class sizes and have a reputation for being stingy on scholarships. Smaller class sizes are always a good thing.

Yea probably what bugs me most about GULC is the huge class size and its low biglaw + federal clerkship percentage.

Thank you everyone. This was my first time on TLS and I really appreciate the responses.

I went to a LAC with ~1200 students and really disliked the class size. I don't know that law school will change how I feel about tiny classes- that's one reason I was interested in GULC.

I'll post my numbers after I take the September LSAT and at that time will welcome any advice on where to apply!

no you want small class sizes tho
it's better for you employment-wise
if georgetown cut their class size in half outcomes would change tremendously
the problem is they have too many students and can't manage to place them all in quality jobs

Another problem is that GULC students bid on DC, the most selective of the three primary markets. Despite the massive downside to striking out, law students don't always maximize their chances at a big law job. They bid on small/selective markets, do too few screeners, gun for niche practice areas, and just generally screw everything up.

Either way, that really sucks. At UT you can have up to 25 and, speaking from experience, even that number can potentially lead to only a handful of CBs. 7 screeners is really skirting a dangerous line unless you have excellent grades and/or interviews (and even that might not be enough).
