Okay, I'm officially confused as to whether an unsolicited Northwestern fee waiver went out or not. But if it did, I am already concerned about what's happening with my cycle. I didn't receive an unsolicited (or solicited) fee waiver, but I did get into Northwestern last cycle. Are schools potentially giving me the CRS cold shoulder because I'm a reapplicant?

So let's assume I know nothing. Here goes: How are you getting fee waivers? Are you soliciting them on the basis of need? Is that a real need, or are you simply asking because you can and then they are being granted? This is clearly not my strongsuit.

My apologies Steve - I thought I was giving the definitive answer to help clear up the confusion, but I guess I just helped to create more. Regardless - anyone can apply for a fee waiver for NU through their website and should get one as long as they apply by the first week in November.

As for Instinctive, there are a few ways to get fee waivers:

1. Sign up for CAS through LSAC. Some schools (most schools) use the candidate referral service to find prospective students who match certain criteria they have for granting a fee waiver. If you receive one of these, then it is considered "unsolicited."

2. Email the school including your LSAT score and GPA. You should reference your LSAC account number, and the school may or may not respond (positively or negatively). This would be soliciting a merit based fee waiver.

3. Email the school probably including LSAT/GPA and Account Number but also mention "I'd like to apply to your school, but money is tight and I'd rather not pay for it" (not in those exact words). This would be soliciting a need based fee waiver.

4. Have a valid email address and a first and last name and you'll probably get some of the lower ranked schools, probably with promises of full tuition scholarships.

I just got an email from Cornell as well, but it doesn't say anything about a fee waiver, just that they'd like "like to encourage [me] to consider submitting an application."

Were there 2 versions of emails, one with a fee waiver and one with an invitation to apply, or might have some people not read closely enough?

I almost missed the fee waiver in mine. My email had the same subject line but then said "P.S. We're also waiving your application fee. Why not give us a try?"

At first I thought I didn't get anything from Cornell when everyone was posting about it around noon, but I just recently got it and the email was specifically about diversity. I assume this is because I'm an URM. Does anybody else get these specially tailored fee waiver messages?

In the same boat as you, although I didn't get the Cooley email, but I did get Charlotte School of Law and an email from University of Detroit - Mercy (oddly enough not a fee waiver from them).

I've gotten Cooley, Akron(repeatedly, they don't stop), Idaho, W&M, Cinci, TTThomas Jefferson, and a few others I think. Yes, I know, not all of those schools are in the same league of shiTTTy

The craziest part of all of it for me, is that I got the "consider applying/info" email from Harvard to kick off the cycle, and then radio silence from the rest of the t14.

My school changed our email over the summer and I recently updated my email address and started receiving fee waivers. Is there any chance I missed few waiver opportunities while my email was down? Is email the only way you can receive a fee waiver?

Has anyone received a fee waiver from UMN? Unsolicited or solicited? I tried soliciting a waiver but they responded with:

"At this time, we only grant merit-based fee waivers through LSAC’s Candidate Referral Service (CRS). Prospective students who meet the merit criteria AND have registered with CRS prior to taking the LSAT automatically receive a fee waiver. Unfortunately we are unable to grant merit-based fee waivers to students who are not registered with CRS or who registered after taking the LSAT."

What? I don't even know if I registered prior to the LSAT or not. I mentioned the fact that I was an alum, but evidently thousands of dollars and several years at the school isn't enough to give back a little.
