Reporting Race

Postby Darmody » Mon May 27, 2013 2:20 am

If I'm not a URM, should I report my race (Asian)? Will this have a negative impact on admissions or will not reporting be irrelevant since they can tell by my name/interviews?

If you clearly identify yourself as a certain race, why wouldn't you report your race?

I personally decline to report my race whenever possible. I just don't see its relevance to anything.

In case you're concerned, the Ivy League schools have stopped their unofficial discrimination against Asians. The 'quota' days of the early and mid 2000s, when Asians found it more difficult to get in because schools were looking for "classes with similar race and gender profiles to the general population" are gone, presumably because schools realized how racist and eerily similar to Jew quotas this practice was. Percentages of Asians at YH, etc have gone way up in the last few years.

Full disclosure: the previous is mostly based on anecdotal and secondhand evidence.

Law schools don't have the massive overrepresentation of Asians that undergrads do, so it won't hurt you. It's just like being white for law school.

If you're Asian ethnicity, chances are, it won't help you. The one minority where it doesn't help and possibly works against you I bet.
