3.56 GPA, 175 LSAT; What are my chances for a T14 Law School

Postby Actary » Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:43 pm

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing well!
It is my first time posting/writing here, so I am relatively new to this forum, and relatively nervous about my law school application. I would really appreciate it if you guys could give me some insights as to where I stand in respect to, possibly, a T14 law school admission...

Let me then begin by stating that I have lived in the US for four years now, I am not a US citizen, but I have two other nationalities...
My background is fairly unique for I grew up (when I was around 7-8 years old) and was personally affected by a civil war going on in my country. As a result, my family and I immigrated to France, and while waiting for the nationality, we were homeless ( from 10-12 years old) ... I am hoping, thus, that my personal essay will have a certain weight, will be interesting enough...

I attend a CUNY college, majoring in Political Science. No prestigious college. Didn't have the financial resources nor the appropriate knowledge of the American system ( I had to take the SAT less than 5 months after arriving, barely speaking English, still managed to receive decent scores) ...

I took the LSAT and managed to take home a 175, lot of work, I practically gave up my life for ten months. It was worth it, nevertheless.

What worries me is my average GPA of 3.56... I had an extremely difficult year... Both my parents were in car accidents, my father had a massive and dangerous surgery. I was the only one speaking English in the household and I needed to take care of everything...while working two jobs (over 30hours), being a full time student and involved in college. Needless to say, my GPA dropped. Last semester I succeded in pulling all As, in five classes.

Now, in all honesty guys, do you think I have the slightest chance of being accepted at NYU, University of Chicago, Columbia or HYS ? If not, any suggestions of schools in the T10 ?
I am thinking of taking a year off probably, but not still sure about it...

I thank you all...

Yeah, I'd blanket the top 10. Harvard is really persnickety about UGPAs from what I understand, but beyond that, with a 175 LSAT you should be under consideration basically everywhere.

Good luck.

You've got a really good shot at nyu, especially of you take a year off and apply early next year. pretty good chance at Chicago and Columbia too. Harvard is a toss up.

Blanket the T10. Yale and SLS are gonna be tough with that GPA so I say you have very very little chance at those schools. HLS is your best bet of the T3 and you should apply ASAP. But odds are still against you cause your LSAT isnt that high that it would cause them to ignore your below 25th GPA.

Oh, you're applying this year. You're kind of late. I might see if you could get a job.

Thanks for understanding guys ! I guess, I just have to figure out how this works...
I've been an avid reader of this forum, and it is essentially thanks to the various and numerous advices and support that my lsat study was so successful... It just pains me that my GPA is not as high as to guarantee me Top 6... Thanks again!

Eh, I think you're at the 25th percentile for NYU (and above 75th for LSAT). So you're probably at the same mark for Columbia. Stanford is a black box that would probably love your story. I dunno - no guarantees in life, but your odds will be markedly better if you wait a year, I would think.

I'd give it a 5-10% at Yale. I'm no expert, but Yale seems to like these types of candidates. If they ever were going to overlook a GPA, it would be the OP's. If I were the OP, I'd apply to a couple of dream schools like HYS and CCN and if the results aren't good, wait until next cycle and reapply.

I'm a 0L, so grain of salt, but...

I think folks are right-- you should try to get a job and wait to apply next cycle, and make sure you get your apps in REALLY early. As in by the end of September. If you write a good personal statement and include an addendum regarding your GPA (and if your transcript does in fact show good grades with the exception of the period where you had family problems) you could get lucky.
