Re: Ls Timeline
1L Year
Fall Semester:
- Apply for Moot Court, Mock Trial.
- After November 1, speak with Career Services re: 1L summer employment.
- After December 1, apply to jobs for 1L summer (private and public).
- Ace Exams.
Spring Semester:
- Interview with firms, public interest organizations. Go to 1L On-Campus Interviewing program ("1L OCI"), if necessary.
- Ace Exams.
- Writing Competition for Law Review; apply to secondary-journals.
Summer:
- 1L summer employment, preferably in the legal profession.
- In August, return to school for "2L OCI." Interview with ~1000 law firms and hopefully get a job.
2L Year
Fall Semester:
- Finish callback interviews (if you still have them) and get that job!
- If you're on a journal, you'll probably start writing a student Note.
- Ace Exams.
Spring Semester:
- Hand in your Note.
- Ace Exams.
Summer:
- 2L summer employment, preferably at a large firm that will hire you after graduation or at a public interest organization (you know, if "that's your thing").
3L Year
- Drink beer, take your mandatory professional development class, do pro bono work (if required), take a lot of seminars, *make sure you have enough credits/have taken all courses required to graduate, and save enough money to take the bar exam (unless, of course, you have a firm willing to pay your fees, in which case, you should save your money and spend it on beer).
Note: Every school has somewhat different schedules and requirements, so these may not fit exactly your circumstances, but I think that as a general guide, these are the big things you need to do over the three years as a law student. Also, check the school's academic calendar and requirements online: that should provide you with more specific information.
