Last Minute Fee Waiver??? Their Motivation...?
A certain top 14 school (top 5 actually) just gave me a fee waiver. I scored under 170 with a 4.0 GPA from a state school...
What on earth is their motivation for granting me this fee waiver?! Speculations?

Applications are down this year & you probably have some quality that the school is seeking. Which Top 14 ? Which Top 5 ? Are you a minority or a URM ?

Hate to rain on your parade, but I also got one from the same school you are talking about and I am a 3.0/166. Congrats on a great GPA/score, though.

Why is the school name being kept secret ?

Allow me to divulge the secret. It's Columbia. I'm 3.2/172 and I just got one, so I'd guess I have somewhere between a 0-5% chance.
Oh well, it's Columbia, and now it's only $12. I'll gladly be fodder for their selectivity rating on the off chance I get in.
Should my PS be about hoping to one day be David Stern and why I need to go to the same law school?

I have an absolutely 0% chance (really more like -15%) and I got the fee waiver too. I am not going to take the bait and waste my $12. They dont want my 167 OR my 2.44

Yeah it's Columbia and my LSAT was 169 with that 4.0. I'm assuming I have little to no chance (I'm not an "URM"), so I'm just wondering what they hope to gain by encouraging me to apply~

Rejecting more applicants protects yields and helps ranking.molomloch wrote:Yeah it's Columbia and my LSAT was 169 with that 4.0. I'm assuming I have little to no chance (I'm not an "URM"), so I'm just wondering what they hope to gain by encouraging me to apply~

I think I'll do the same bebop. If my Feb retake goes perfectly and then I also get lucky and get a 180 or something, I might have as high as a 10% chance! Plus, maybe every school but WUSTL hated the rest of my app, but Columbia will randomly love it.

Worst case scenario you lose $12.Kabuo wrote:I think I'll do the same bebop. If my Feb retake goes perfectly and then I also get lucky and get a 180 or something, I might have as high as a 10% chance! Plus, maybe every school but WUSTL hated the rest of my app, but Columbia will randomly love it.

Re: Last Minute Fee Waiver??? Their Motivation...?
I've been getting mail from them all year encouraging me to apply and got this email this morning. My parents don't get it when I laugh and throw it away. I know they aren't actually interested in my 3.2 no matter how high my LSAT is. They must really want to up their selectivity ranking.

I'm a 171, 3.2, and URM, and even I'm not falling for that one... They just want to reject some more candidates to help with rankings.

You may have had the fee waiver to begin with. Columbia had some hidden ones.

I got one this morning too.
I think theyre trying to get some last minute apps in so they can deny them-- that way the ratio of applications to acceptances goes down, and they maintain their ultra-selective status.
It's a numbers game, but it's not gonna stop me from sending mine

Calling bullshit on this one. Any URM with a 171 that would apply to Boalt will surely apply to CU for $12. Trying to thin the herd?
Who cares if they are using you and who cares if it cost $12. $12 really, that the price of a pizza. I didnt get the letter and Im a 175 2.7, but I put an email in asking.
Everyone should send the application at 2 PM on the button.

I got the fee waiver as well, and already sent my app in. It's a long shot, but why not?
