Re: recommend a law-related book/tv show/movie
I actually found the deep end (all 5 episodes) to be so ridiculous it was comic gold. If you look in retrospect at the amount of hooking up/drugs/ridiculous things that 1Ls never do (pleading a case their 1st day) -- it was actually kinda interesting seeing how badly a portrait CBS could paint for the general Americandextermorgan wrote:The Defenders is decent. The Practice was good (you can find the first few seasons on Hulu).
The Deep End was terrible.

these are older movies, and probably not too true to the law - but i love Witness for the Prosecution, and 12 Angry Men. and obviously To Kill a Mockingbird.

lol Bonfire of the Vanities is a book. But it's a novel, so maybe not exactly what you're looking for.tlslsnlsp wrote:shameless bump:

Rumpole of the Bailey - great old BBC lawyer series starring Leo McKern (who played the Swami in the Beatles movie Help!, humorously)
also Amistad and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Law and Order UK is also worth checking out.

I'm honestly sympathetic, but no. The Wire is the only piece of legal entertainment I have ever heard a professor recommend, and that has happened multiple times. The have a class based on the show at Chicago this year. There are no comparisons.s0ph1e2007 wrote:FalseRand M. wrote:Any other answers to this question are simply wrong.glewz wrote:The Wire

The stuttering public defender from My Cousin Vinny is one of the greatest legal characters in any movie. His opening statements to the jury are pure gold.
"Ladies and Gentlemen of the ju-ju-ju-ju..."
Also, the deep end was terrible. Rowdy was the only good character - but, the nightclub they frequent is actually in Dallas, and I used to work there, so I shamelessly watched every episode.

I really liked Runaway Jury. No idea how relevant it is to law in real life, but I was entertained (then again, I'm also entertained by a laser pointer....so sorry if you hate it).

Anything mafia related, such as Al Pacino stuff.
Actually that's just is what I have been into recently.
Oh yeah, The Paper Chase and Presumed Innocent were cool lawyer-related movies.

anything w. pacino is golden.
and justice for all.... is no exception. although it doesn't paint lawyers as heroic leaders of righteousness by any means. it might also turn you away from the field completely. but see it, because it's a great movie.

It depends on if you want mindless entertainment or intellectually gratifying entertainment, i spose....
Read The Brother's Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky- will change your life/perspective/attitude toward law & life.
For legal philosophy..HLA Hart's Concept of Law is pretty bomb, easy to read and captures the dominant philosophy held by most lawyers and judges whether they realize it or not (opinion obviously)
Read a natural law philosopher if you want to balance that out though...
