Does Undergraduate School Matter?

Post by nystateofmind » Fri Jun 04, 2010 1:46 am

URM undergrad here.

I go to very small public university, the reason is mainly because of cost as it very inexpensive but still somewhat respected. (It was named the best value college in Alabama by the Princeton Review, for whatever that's worth  ) My main question is that if this can really hold me back from getting into a prestigious school like Columbia.

I'm really worried about this; any response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry if I sound naive, probably do, but I don't know if it would hurt me or not on an application to a T14 school.

If anything, your poor research skills are going to do you in.

nah, a GPA is a GPA when it really comes down to it.

also don't be too hard OP he is clearly new and probably doesn't yet know the bounty that tls has to offer ;)

Better be ready to hit the LSAT out of the park though Broski. Do not underestimate the importance of it or the value of preparing for it.

check his profile, OP already scored 171.

Columbia's an extreme reach with the 3.2 GPA, though. with his URM status, he would've been better off splitting high GPA-low LSAT.

Partially credited. But to the extent that certain schools are known for grade inflation this is over-general. All things held equal, a 3.5 graduate of a Cal State school is at a slight disadvantage against a similarly credentialed graduate from UCLA or an even more prestigious school. But no efficient adcom is going to blindly accept or reject someone because of their school. They are, however, going to mind the trends of certain schools, especially where certain graduates tend to do well at their law schools.
