To defer or not to defer... Forum

I'm thinking about attempting to defer my NYU acceptance by one year so that I can go live on an island and help my friend start up a surf resort and be a scuba instructor. I know many of you think this is insane. What are the chances I would be allowed to do this? I do have a scholly on the line too so obviously I will need to consider that.

What is the process by which you attempt to defer? And..should I? I'm already two years out of uni (worked full time for a yr and a half or so, traveling at the moment) so I would be entering at 26 if I did this. But the experience would be incredible. Thanks for any thoughts.

If you go to NYU, there will be countless times during the school year (especially during winter) where you'll be daydreaming about the tropics and regretting the fact that you're not hanging out on an island

Do it. If they don't grant your deferral, just apply again next year, or go somewhere else, sounds like it will be worth it, and 26 is not old by any means if you're worried about that.

It sounds awesome! I wish I could use my defer year to do something fun like that. Unfortunately, I need to work to save money....
