I'd say depending on how you framed it, but I'd also be concerned about seeming like I was trumpeting his misfortune to increase my odds (I'm not saying that's your intent at all, but the perception could be there). How would that bring diversity to the class? How are you planning to talk about it?

Yeah I'd say no. There are plenty of instances where a non urm could effectively write a diversity statement, but from the info you provided, I don't see this as a great idea.
