My PS is about my family's socioeconomic backgrounds and overcoming obstacles. Is it necessary to still writ a DS? I don't want it to be overkill

I think I would reframe what you have for your PS into a DS, and write something else for your PS.

What diversity would you write your statement about? Don't write two essays on your socioeconomic status, but if you're a unique applicant in other ways, definitely write a DS about one of those.
