I'm also coming to LA from the East Coast so my apartment search is somewhat limited. I'd like to find a studio for around 1K. Is this even possible in LA? I looked at the buildings mentioned above - the Medici etc. - but those were still pricey. How would the commute/neighbor be in Miracle Mile / Mid-Wilshire? Any neighborhood/ apt complex suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks :)

1k is plenty if you are frugal and hunt.
Miracle Mile, Koreatown, Silverlake, Echo Park, Mid-city, Palms, Inglewood and plenty of others.

Koreatown will be the closest if you are worried about commute, but Miracle Mile isn't far - maybe 5 miles. I don't know any specific complexes - look on craigslist and that should help. Any complex that has a website of their own will probably be expensive. Also, I think USC may hook you up with Westside Rentals or something. Worth checking into.

yo SC peeps. has anyone been in contact with the career services? my friend currently enrolled at T14 school has been trying to freak me out about getting a good summer job out of USC.

I've not contacted Career Services, but spoke with several alums whom I found myself, rather than through the school, and all have had incredible things to say about career services. Allegedly very helpful, and fully capable of getting you work wherever you want.

I know that people have listed many places to live so far, but I was wondering if anyone can list the best places to live, or if anyone has had experience with a commute to USC? from maybe, santa monica?

would anyone strongly suggest to live closer? are there any good areas near usc?

Just put in my deposit for Terrace, room 211. Who else is living in Terrace next year?

I'm late to the party. I just got off the waitlist yesterday.

gello5765, I have a friend who goes to USC and commutes from West LA. It can be done, especially if you have a car. If you're relying on the bus, it's probably better to live in K-town or mid-Wilshire.

I live in Santa Monica and am planning to commute to campus (at least until the end of my lease in late January). I'm hoping it won't be too bad :| If you end up living in Santa Monica too, we should definitely carpool! Any others on the westside?

Ooh, good idea! I'm on the west side right now, on the Beverly Hills border. Organize a carpool!

Hi, I was wondering if you guys who are going to USC next year would be willing to share your numbers. I'm trying to get a feel for what kind of numbers it takes to get into/get money from USC, and lsn is not particurally helpful because of my number combination. Thanks!

Santa Monica to SC is a ROUGH commute. I worked in West Hollywood, which is about half way in between and you are looking at anywhere from 35-50 mins to campus. Unless you just love sitting in loads of traffic, signal after signal, try and live closer.

Anyone know if there is a school sponsored list of some sort of entering 1L's? I'm just wondering for housing and finding roomates etc. I just started getting my acceptance materials (in off the wait list) and am playing catch up while trying to decide if USC is the right place for me. Any UCLA undergrads out there going? I'm gonna need some support if I'm gonna stomach going into the heart of trojan country.

thank you for the input. i'm thinking of living in culver city/palms. i realize it's not THAT much closer than santa monica, but hopefully i will miss part of the chaos of people trying to get onto the 405. what do you think?

I've heard people say the Culver City to USC trip isn't that bad.

I think I said this in the other thread, but I know MBA students who come in from Brentwood and Santa Monica areas, and they don't seem to mind it that much. Obviously they avoid the 405 and hop right onto the 10. Having a roomate to carpool with helps though. I think the Palms/Culver City area would be a good choice too, it's probably a little bit cheaper than west of the 405.

ya, i think avoiding the 405 is key. i know i just don't want to live downtown, or near usc at all. if i'm correct, though, the 10 doesn't have a carpool lane, right?

hmmm, i think you might be right... I haven't taken the 10 in a long time. But I haven't heard them complain about the commute ever. But Palms/Culver City is probably a good bet.

the 10 does not have a carpool lane between the 405 and the 110... culver city is a better option than santa monica. try to be east of the 405 and your commute will be much easier!

I did this drive about six times for the ASD (for the day, to check out the area that weekend etc, so I did it at a variety of times, morning, weekdays, weekends, evenings...). Takes about 15-20 minutes.

I will be living in the North Univ. Park area. Surprisingly, the rent is high as shit. Pretty much a grand for a room in a 2 bedroom apartment.
Ill enjoy walking from north of campus all the way down to the law school and seeing all the beautiful undergrads in warm weather attire year round.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
