OPINIONS NEEDED - Negotiation Letter to Fordham

Post by Gotti » Thu Feb 17, 2011 1:20 pm

okay I just wanted some opinions...
I'm negotiating with Fordham and am trying to leverage BU, GW, and UMN (with $28k/yr) acceptances.
I'm writing a negotiation email and I'm torn...I am already saying I got into those three schools, but should I mention the $28k/year from UMN in the opening email or just say "UMN is offering me a very generous offer" ...?

I wouldn't use offer twice. Personally I'd mention the amount.

Do fordhams offers go out with the initial acceptance packet?
I would say that you are extremely excited about being accepted but that you have received other scholarship offers and want to make sure that fordham can be a financially viable option. Maybe you can open up with a general statement and see if they are open to negotiation at all... then go into detail. Or you can just go all out and see what happens. I have no idea what they would prefer.

I'm going to be e-mailing Fordham asking for more money too. I think the best way to go about it is to be very gracious and thankful for your admittance and if you already received a scholarship offer be thankful for it. Next, go into how you have offers from specific schools that will make the attendance there much easier financially. I'm putting specifics in mine (naming schools and $$ offered). I'm probably going to throw in the CoL in NY being higher too making it an even greater financial burden. My theory is why not just lay it all out there and see what happens. As long as your polite, the worst they can say is no.

Also in response to gov Fordham scholarships go out after acceptance in an email. Mine came like 2 weeks later.

it's been 2 weeks and 1 or 2 days! No one in the past 2 years with a 164 on LSN has gotten any money. I don't think leveraging is going to work at all :(

Mention the amount, for sure.

I almost think you should leave out the non-scholly acceptances. (I'd mention them if they were T-14 + UCLA/UT). But basically make it about Minn's $$ and ask Fordham to do what they can. (Maybe they will give 12K/year or something at least..)

Agreed with JJ.

The thing is Fordham is REALLY stingy with money. So it may work but be prepared to hear a "sorry, there's nothing we can do" response. :(

+1. I'm a Fordham undergrad and I've spoken with an adcomm at a fundraiser. I brought up Fordham's reputation for being stingy, and he basically said it's because (and I'm paraphrasing) Fordham will fill it's class, and they feel no need to provide further encouragement...

I think fordham is in an attractive position of being the next best school in NYC behind Columbia and NYU. Basically anyone who does not get into those two schools and wants to go to school in NY, want to go to Fordham. This gives Fordham a reason not to offer a lot of money since they have the pick of a pretty large litter. But it doesnt hurt to try. I was offered a little something but will be negotiating for more. I suggest being gracious and humbled by their acceptance, emphasize how badly you want to go to school there, and how important merit aid will be to your decision. I also plan on trying crying and begging if that doesnt work
oh trust me, I definitely made this come across in my request for merit aid. LOL. PM me if you wanna see it!

If you wish to meet with a staff member to discuss your personal situation, please e-mail your request or you may contact us directly at 212-636-6815 to set up an appointment.

Judith McNatt, Assistant Dean
Kathleen Keenan, Associate Director
Ursula Duran, Assistant Director

Dont send a letter. Call and talk to a live body. I'd start with Judith Mcnatt. When you call say, you are waiting for your scholarship letter (assumptive close) but before it is manufactured you want to state your case to a real person.

Tell them that you will treat every day in the building like the day you open up that scholarship letter--express your gratitude, but more importantly explain how you will represent the school going forward. Law school is a relationship sale. You will be there for 3 years. Be someone they want to see when they walk in the building. And you will be their ambassador when you leave. Show them how they will be glad you are. You are asking for something but you are trading something of value for that thing.

if you do get them to talk about money make them an offer. For example, say you are offered 28k at UMN guaranteed but you would trade that for $28k with them with stips bc you know you will be in the top of their program.

Welp. They didn't exactly fill their class, unless there is some other reason why they wanted approximately 100 fewer people compared to the previous year.

Could you explain where you got the 100 number? Perhaps I am misreading this graph but I don't see that.

I got $10k/year earlier this week with a 164/3.77 (although my softs are pretty chill).

Seriously. I just noticed that, myself. This thread may need to die.
Yup. Given the changes in the economy and the fact that it was only a page to begin with, I now declare that this thread has lost its usefulness.
