Like 2 times today someone on TLS tried to compare the URM thread to other threads
1. To compare the URM thread to the 2013-14 waiters thread
2. To compare the URM thread to a splitters thread


And IRL people say it to me all the time " well isn't this just like the civil rights movement" "dude no it is not"

Well, I suppose in each case there are similarities.
1. Many of us have sent in our apps and are waiting.
2. Each involves a subgroup of the applicant pool with admissions that are less easily predictable than average... also, I'm a splitter.
It still seems like a bizarre move. What motivates these comparisons?

As for the civil rights thing, I've only encountered that in relation to gay rights (which doesn't bother me) and, once, to the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan (which bothered me A LOT). Are you seeing it in different circumstances?

For me the issue with those wasn't that there was some intellectual comparison made between the similarities and differences of URM admissions and splitter decisions or the URM thread being in a similar chronological place to other general waiting threads, but that the comparison was "if the URM thread gets to EXIST then why can't my thing!?" And in doing that it trivialized what actually happens on this thread, which is 90% advice/support/relevant discussion and 10% joking around with each other, by comparing it with threads that have been largely the reverse.

I see. That makes sense--the reason I thought the comparison was bizarre is because we are a broader, more dedicated community than any bunch of splitters who are just panicking about their numbers and a more constructive one than people just waiting. (In other words, people in this thread are awesome.)

As for "if the URM thread gets to EXIST then why can't my thing!?", that person should just shut up and make their damn thing instead of being obnoxious. Clearly they see the value of communities--even beyond the particular considerations that make URM communities important--otherwise they wouldn't want their own things, so they should understand why ours has value and gets to exist.

Yeah. Seeing comparisons like that would frustrate me too, it turns out.
