Loyola $$$ vs UC Davis/Hastings
28k easily renewable Scholarship at Loyola vs Full Sticker (in state) for the UCs. What option would you choose for someone who wants to hopefully get big law and also wants to stay in socal if possible?

Re: Loyola $$$ vs UC Davis/Hastings
Since you want to do big law I'd probably say either Hastings or Loyola, and since you want to stay in So Cal I'd probably say Loyola. Plus the extra money would probably be nice.
That's not to knock on Davis (which is actually my top choice) but I think if you're making your decision on those factors then Loyola is the better option.

Re: Loyola $$$ vs UC Davis/Hastings
pretty tough choice...
loyola is a good school. definitely manages to hold its own in a competitive LA market. its in socal. good network of alums.
however, a hastings degree is more portable. who knows if you had to move to new york or somewhere outside of california?
but if your main goal is to stay in socal, its best to go to the best school you can in the area you want to practice. your opportunities to network or get internships in socal would be a tremendous asset to your future job prospects.

Staying in Socal would be nice (staying In CA is a must) but I would gladly trade in a better first job in any part of the state instead of having a mediocre job in LA/Orange County/SD. ...Well, I'm off to visit the two UC schools. For anyone still deciding on Loyola, I was more impressed with the school after I visited. Cool buildings, cute girls, and a nice student body. Their career services couldn't really give me any stats on their grads employment prospects though...but I guess everyone really knows you have to be at the top to get the plum jobs there anyways.

I had the same decision to make and I decided on Loyola. It's different for everyone and I still question myself but I have a SO in San Diego who I'd like to keep around hahaha. Have you visited all the schools? Where did you feel most comfortable?
*Edit: I just noticed you said you were going to visit the UCs. Enjoy!

Hard call. UC Davis/Hastings rankings are better but not so much so that 90k debit is totally worth it. Are you in the 75% for gpa and lsat for past attending Loyla grads? If you are I say take the money and run. Study hard, do good, and you'll be set. If not the UCs might be a better pick.

Apparently, the COL in LA is way more than Davis...so it woudln't be crazy to take the Davis degree over Loyola's money, so that's what I Decided

Re: Loyola $$$ vs UC Davis/Hastings
I know there are quite a few TLSers out there that are anticipating this sort of scenario and wondering what to do...
Any present thoughts, especially given the UC tuition hikes?
I was speaking to a close friend a few days ago. He received his LLM from a lower T-14 a couple of years ago and he's distraught over his debt. He told me that I should go anywhere that gives me considerable money (assuming it's not a T-14 and not a TTT). Specifically, he said Loyola with $ over Davis or Hastings, unless I'm willing to take the debt and I'm dead-set on working in San Francisco.
Thoughts?

Re: Loyola $$$ vs UC Davis/Hastings
Your friend is right: A J.D. from Davis or Hastings is a better long-term investment than one from Loyola, but the picture changes if you're looking at Loyola for free. It depends what your career goals are, if you want LA or SF, how debt-averse you are, if you want to work in PI, etc. I would (and in fact did) pick Davis, personally, but there is a great argument to be made for a free LLS JD ITE.ViP wrote:I know there are quite a few TLSers out there that are anticipating this sort of scenario and wondering what to do...

I can't imagine taking Davis over LLS money or not, but I also can't imagine a life in the bay area. Nice to visit, wouldn't want to live there.

How about this same scenario with PI as ultimate goal?

What about LLS (51k top 30%) vs. Davis (sticker) for BigLaw IP/Patent?

Where do you want to work? If anywhere but LA, definitely choose Davis. If LA, you have a tough decision to make.matrix637 wrote:What about LLS (51k top 30%) vs. Davis (sticker) for BigLaw IP/Patent?
Did you apply to Santa Clara? They have a rather strong IP program and you'd get good $.
